Y'know how few games actually let the game end with the bad guy winning? The heros gave it their all, but to no avail? The bad guy killed them, the world reigns in chaos, the end? No sequel, no more game play, end?

Moogle knows best... He said that people play a game to win.
If you can't win the game no matter what, the secret is bound to get out, and the person who was considering buying that game before they learned that winning is not the idea here will just drop their money and say, "Fuck this."

Unless, of course, you were to make the guy(s) who killed the hero(s) the new MC(s) before the game ends. That's another topic all together...

Got me there. Unoriginal, yup. I just think it's a good way to get around it.

But, what about ending on a comprimise? The heroes tried, they couldn't defeat the evil dude, they ran away, and vow to do what they can to resist him anyhow, or some such?

I think that such an ending could surpirse the player yet not completely frustrate them as much as dieing would. Hopefully sad, but not so much frustation.

I do see your point, but monetary support? Healthcare? Hardly reveting gaming topics. I don't want to see, for example, Wingedmene cueing up at a job centre waiting for his welfare check.
I cant see how you can make an effective RPg which does'nt involve a few heroes fighting against the odds without loads of hero swapping. And if you keep bringing in new heroes, than there's very little character left, you have to introduce a new personality. The new characters will be faceless basically.

Hmm. Actually, a game where you were a person/family on welfare and had to work your way out of it could be kind of interesting. It could be like "Sim Poverty" or something.

So, for me, it's more about the practicallity of the adventure. Whether it's one or one hundred heros going off to save the world, the world should be able to afford to at least lend the hero's a good weapon or anything really useful. I realize that some of the best items in most games are actually not in stores. They are in dungeons and guarded by a challenging opponent, usually. That is only one small solution. My first question still remains. Why do the merchants have to be such money mincing ignoramouses?!

What I'm doing in DoZ is a) making there only be a few battle-worthy weapons available in stores, mostly just replacement items though, b) you can't really "Buy" or "Find" upgrades, you have to build them/it, c) the missions are better suited for a small band here, as the government is busy hunting down the Megamage terrorists from the year before and an army can be wiped out by a single Necro-Grunt in a head-on battle, but a small group has stealth on their side. although it does bug me when it's just one character saving the world. Here, in DoZ, you're trying to stop Dethyl (who nobody has a clue about- they think that the Necro King is behind the disappearing Proto Pearl) and recover the moon pearl for Hyrule (which is really the Proto Pearl).

Another Idea (of MINE) is that you play as the Bad guy that's trying to take over the world.

Aye. I too have a story from the villain's perspective.

This is really not as original an idea as you all would like to think. It is underdeveloped, though, so I say go for it.

Villians aren't as interesting as heroes. Bad heroes are interesting, but generic bad villians aren't. Unless you made it comedic, like having heroes lined up for the slaughter.

But yeah, I'd rather go for a bad hero. Note that by "bad hero" I don't mean a hero who was manipulated by a villian to fight for the wrong side most of the game (ie Kain, opening the esper gate in ff6, etc.), but rather a hero who wants to slaughter innocents at the like, yet still destroys the "greater evil" (the villian).

*Cough*Orsted*cough cough*

Anyways, villains are perfectly capable of being just as interesting as heroes (villain as in the character that is perceived by everyone else in the game as the bad guy). Sure, generic villains suck, but generic heroes are just as bad. Instead of a hero who goes out to slay goblins and dragons and such, you could have the main character be a villain who sympathizes with the goblins and decides to help them drive the humans out of their territory. (Don't use this idea, by the way, or I'll hunt you down and slit your throat.)

Some possible reasons for the hero(es) going it alone, whilst myriads of country folk stand and watch:
1. The kingdom has already sent its BEST WARRIORS, and they failed to defeat the evil, so everybody else is too scared to try.

2. Everyone is under a certain spell/influence that for some reason only the hero(es) is/are free from (perhaps they grew up in a remote village, or they were born with a superpower, or they're newcomers to the land, or they're just so stupid they'll do anything).

3. The hero(es) was/were CHOSEN by a SUPREME BEING to do the job, and no one else was.

4. The hero(es) is/are driven by a CERTAIN EMOTION or other thing that no one else is, like REVENGE, or perhaps they are the last of an EXTINCT RACE.

5. Games just wouldn't be fun if every good person in the world started beating the crap out of the bad guys. That wouldn't be a challenge. You're a hero because you save the world, it doesn't save itself!
Sorry if this exact same thing has been said in this thread, but I just didn't feel like reading every last reply.

#3 is so incredibly overdone.

There's also #6: Other people ARE trying. Think Spider-Man 2, where the police are also fighting Doc Ock, they're just not good enough. Of course, for this to make any sense, the heroes have to be superhuman, since there's no other way that so many other people would fail.

Another reason could be that the hero(es) are the only ones that have realized something is wrong in the kingdom and nobody believes them, so they have to stop it by themselves.
