Yeah, yeah, and it still does half of what I want.

Shaede, if the goal of the game is to make money, then FFXI and WOW are excellent examples. ;)

FF7, not FFXI. FFXI is a great example of a complete failure in game design, but that's a rant for another time.

Unlike a lot of literature, games usually don't "come before their time". Most of the masterpieces are recognised and appricated almost immediatly. I'm sure we can all think up great exceptions where amazing games are overlooked, but on the the whole, you can tell what it is gamers want by which games attract the most fans and make the most money.

I wonder if FFXI didn't make more money than VII, what with subscription fees and all...

But money = good is hardly a valid argument with games like Cave Story available for free. Besides, the most-downloaded OHR game is FFH, whose author doesn't even feel its his own best game.

The FF series currently makes much more money than it should, given how craptabulous the series is getting. That alone is a refutation of your argument.

This is only relevant if you assume that "what gamers want" is the same as "what's good."

But you can still tell from the fanbase.

George Lucas was happier with his Star Wars prequels more then the originals, but does that make the prequels better?

That's because the franchise now has a big name because of FF7. I don't see how this is relevant to what I was saying, honestly, as I wasn't talking about FFX-2 or FFXII.

If I was to assume otherwise, it would imply that the vast magority of gamers are idiots and fools. I don't believe that to be true. Thus I tend to believe that, on the whole, games which make a lot of money and have a large fanbase are good games. Again, there are exceptions all the time, but rarely does a terrible game attract a large fanbase.

Just to rain down my little cloud of darkness here, I didn't like this game very much. Part of the reason is that I've designed and at least begun several games similar to this and I've found the concept to be a little tired. There just isn't any room for growth without any way of improving the characters. Darkmoor is a nice effort, but I think it's just too limited. Moogle1 claims that the battles are all unique and interesting, when in reality most of them are beatable by using the same old strategies over and over. (I played through the game with two different parties and both runs were similar)

There are also balance issues which I'm sure Moogle is aware of. Paladins are nigh-useless, for one. Clerics aren't really necessary either since you can just rape most of the enemies in a few rounds. Ninjas, Witches, and Wizards are all really overpowered. Only battles I had trouble with were the drawn-out battle with the Revenge spell and the death crystal one.

Probably the best game in the Human Day Contest, but it was a little dry. My entry would have been better if I had actually worked on it :p
