<Not to change this brilliant subject of Mythology, but I have concocted an idea that might be cool for James. You should get all of your work (The ones you have accounted for) together in a big shot. Maybe if you could fit them on a shelf, or just on the floor. (Just be careful not to step on them. I don't want my suggestion to turn out horribly wrong for you.) Take one; maybe two; pictures and show us your life's work. Well, at least maybe a segment of your life's work...
PS: I think that would be interesting to see. All of the art all in one amazing picture! If a picture says a thousand words, imagine the roucus this one will make!
PPS: Just a suggestion... _________________ Planning Project Blood Summons, an MMORPG which will incinerate all of the others with it's sheer brilliance...

Sirens were the beutiful women/bird-women (translations vary) who enchanted seafarers with their song. The men would jump overboard and swim to the rock where the Sirens sang, where they would either be eaten or waste away listening to the song (again, interpretations vary here). Odysseus (sp?) encountered them on his voyage home, and had his crew put wax plugs in their ears and tie him to the mast so he could hear the song and they could pass by without risk.
The Harpies, if I recall correctly, were horrible bird women with steel feathers who constantly harrassed some king, stealing his food whenever he tried to eat. Normal weapons couldn't harm the Harpies due to their armored feathers, but Hercules was able to defeat them as one of his Labors by clanging pots and pans together, creating such a racket that the Harpies were scared off forever. At least I THINK those were the Harpies . . . there were so many bird-woman hybrids in Greek mythology . . . _________________ UP DOWN UP DOWN LEFT LEFT RIGHT RIGHT A B START |

Sirens first appeared in the myth of Jason and the Argonauts, when all of the crew would have been lured to their doom, had Orpheus not thrown his own song in to break that of the Sirens (this is where we get RPG bards from).
Homer's Oddysey, which drew much inspiration from the former work, also had the Sirens, and specifically described them as bird-like.
FF8's Siren, however, is one of the least mistreated mythological creatures that Square has dealt with. |

Ay, yes. I see that interpretations sirens vary. I never knew that Homer's sirens were specificly described as having wings.
And yes, a Harpie is totally different. ugly, not alluring, screaming, not singing.
the important part is that sirens lure men to their deaths (in order to eat them, as a siren friend of mine has assured me, and not just to be mean.)

Maybe I will give that a try. Unfortunately I cannot get all of it together, as I have given several of the largest and best pieces away to family and close friends as gifts, but I do like the idea. Next time I am moving things around in my apartment (and that has been happening a lot lately) I will gather and photograph everything at once. |
