				If you have been following the Ypsiliform release candidate thread, you already know that we are very very close to a new stable release.

And that leads me to think about the codename for the *next* stable release. Traditionally the codename is a silly obscure word chosen by me in alphabetical order, and since the "Z" release is our last before looping back to the beginning of the alphabet, it feels special.

A lot of people have wanted the name Zeitgeist, but I am vetoing that one for various reasons but mainly because I like to be difficult ;)

So I have decided to do this democratically, and put it to a vote.

=NOMINATION=

* Anyone may nominate as many names as they want.

* Names must start with Z

* Names must have more than one syllable

* Names must be a single word (if it is a compound word, you can run it together, or use hyphens)

=VOTING=

* Voting starts when nomination gets boring. Nomination does not have to stop when voting starts.

* Vote for your favorite 3 in order. Favorite will get 3 points. second favorite will get 2 points. third favorite gets 1 point. You also get one optional anti-vote which gives an option -1 points.

* If you want to change your vote, edit your post instead of posting again (that will make counting easier later)

=SPECIAL RULES=

* Zeitgeist cannot win without a 60% majority to override my veto.

* If a word does not appear in the dictionary, is not a name, doesn't appear in fiction, or does not have a story behind it, then it needs a 60% majority to win. (Whether a given word is affected by this rule is subject to debate)

* If no entry reaches a 50% majority, the entry with the largest plurality of votes will win.

* If a winner cannot be determined because of a tie, there will be a second run-off vote. If the second run-off-vote results in a tie, the remaining first-place words must merged into a single super-word. |

				Zebranky!

I brought it up in IRC a couple weeks ago (my understanding was that noone, and certainly not I, wanted Zeitgeist) and many suggestions were lobbed about. But browsing a list of a thousand words starting with Z just feels like... cheating _________________ "It is so great it is insanely great."

* Zaphod

* Zugzwang

* Zoroaster |

				| I think I was the first to suggest Zeitgeist - it loosely translates to "spirit of the times", and I kinda liked the way it seemed to contrast with Rusalka. That being said, "Zarathrustra" is ALSO an amazing and awesome codename. |

				Ziggurat or Zephyr. I would not be averse to Zarathustra, either, although it's tricky to spell. _________________

				I'm gonna third "Zaphod."

Here are a few others I like (which I'll admit I listed a long time ago when the question of the Z engine first came up, so a couple will fail the syllable requirement, but still...):

Zootsuit (normally zoot suit) -- a popular dress suit for men, really popular among swing dancers. Could be a good name for a "fashionable" engine.

Zedsdeadbaby (or "Zed's dead, baby") -- the chronological last line of Pulp Fiction, an indie movie that defied traditional commercialism by changing the rules about what was acceptable in mainstream entertainment.

Zugzwang -- A forced move in chess. Might be a good name if you're scraping for features and decide you just have to release it whether you have any or not. (seems someone else suggested this one earlier)

Zonked -- Exhausted. Might be symbolic of your stance with the engine:).

Zoetrope -- An optical toy (like a kaleidoscope) that simulates motion. Note: Francis Ford Coppola has an artists' post and review website by this name (as well as a production studio).

Zipcode (or zip code) -- A system for getting mail to specific regions accurately.

Zinger -- A surprising announcement.

Zingaro -- The Italian word for gypsy (might need to double-check that one).

Ziff -- An Australian slang word for a beard. Highlights the face of the engine???

Zestful -- Full of zest, stimulating flavor or interest.

Zarzuela -- "A Spanish traditional form of musical comedy."

Zapateado -- Rhythmic stamping in a flamenco dance.

Zabaglione -- An Italian desert, sometimes used as a creamy topping (like ice cream). _________________ Progress Report:

				"Zipper"

But I like "Zephyr" too.

After reading a few of these other suggestions, very few of these even sound like words anymore. |

				To Pepsi Ranger:

"Names must have more than one syllable", my friend.

Zirconium is pretty cool - has anyone here heard of the band Tally Hall?

Zodiac, or some derivative of that. I don't know if I really like that one.

Hell, can't we just use the fancy Z with the extra line that denotes the ring of integers? _________________ My first completed OHR game, Tales of the New World:
