Indeed, the villagers were at worship. Their heads bowed, their hands tied. They thought they were being the Lord's lambs, little knowing that the true innocent ones were at home, awaiting the devil's slaughter!

Dozer Howling wasn't about to let the devil have mutton. He'd told the townsfolk to shut their eyes and look at their feet, and he knew they'd be safe in the cathedral. He regretted not forcing the children to sanctuary, but he needed them for bait.

(I don't know where I'm going with this!)
