-I just played this about two hours ago. And though I think the puzzle links are pretty stupid (sorry, Iblis, they are--who discovers a photograph underneath a friggin' cereal bowl?), the design itself is very well crafted. And the 8-bit graphics: stellar. Another game just missing my Top 10. |
Haha, I agree about the puzzle links, aside from using keys to open doors/boxes I couldn't think of any really good reason to go from one object to the next, and just finding a series of keys to open a series of things seemed boring. So for many of the objects it's just "you put the object down and happen to find something else there." Part of the point of making the game for me was to just do something quickly and get it done, so I decided it'd be okay to have kinda strange puzzles because I didn't want to stop making the game. _________________ Locked

All right, I guess I'll put together a list...
1 - Sword of Jade: Despite my problems with the story and the way the philosophy was presented, this is unquestionably the most polished OHR game I've ever seen, as well as one of the most fun.
2 - Walthros: First OHR game I ever really got into. The fun story and expansive world more than make up for the sub-par graphics.
3 - Trailblazers: Stylish, fun, and an incredible re-purposing of the engine. A technical marvel.
4 - Missing: Another great game based on a custom engine, this solid and retro adventure game really tickled the nostalgia center of my brain.
5 - Bliss: Yeah, yeah, it's my game, but, aside from the poor graphics and breach of protocol, I think I managed good battles and a good story that was both short and not about saving the world, which is something I'd like to see more of in the community.
6 - Wandering Hamster: A little too jokey for my tastes, but the polish and solid game play cannot by denied.
7 - Purgatory: I really loved this game. Great atmosphere, cool puzzles, and good balance. This would be way higher, except I can't for the life of me get past the boss in the sewer.
8 - Bastard.GUNS - Transylvania: Great sense of humor, as well as puzzles integrated into the battle system. Could have been much better, but still lots of fun for 15 minutes. I'd love to see more games do something like this.
Hmm... Looks like I'm going to have to stop at 8. Perhaps I should play more OHR games.
[edit] Never mind... I thought up a few more.
9 - Darkmoor Dungeon - Nice to see a game that focuses on battle tactics, rather than simple leveling and number crunching.
10 - Boundless Ocean - The game play leaves a bit to be desired, but it's visually stunning. (And still quite fun) |

Wow, I'm a tad more "influential" than I thought. Several people have listed me on their list. So even if ya start out making crappy games for the hell of it, you can make... slightly less crappy games for the hell of it? Haha. Nah, but thanks to everyone who mentioned me, that made my day entirely. _________________ ---------------Projects----

That is one ill-fated game of Darkmoor you've got there.
Anyway, I wish you'd listed points as well as votes. Other than that, this is fantastic and brings back memories of when we were excited for the next Monthly to come out so we could see the top 30. _________________

Quarterly is what I did last time, and even that was too much, but probably ideal. If you go to this index it might save you some time:

A possibility: hold a general "Top 30" every quarter or however often, and in the other months have some manner of themed top 30 (probably less since it'd be more limited, maybe 10 or 15). We could have "Top 10 best graphics" or "Top 10 funniest games" or whatever other categories you could think of. This way the results would change every time even if there haven't been many new games. _________________ Locked

That's a good idea too. We could just do the Top 30 every year and have other similar lists. But really, there aren't enough games in different genres and such to justify a community-wide vote... |
