|
|
Well, my friends, I finally uploaded the alpha demo of Hoshima (which is actually just the opening, but it's a 10-minute long opening as well as a bit of character introduction and credits). It's not much but it's enough to take a look at. I apologize for the 54 MB filesize, but it's all the damn MP3s' fault. Also, in the future, I will look for a way to set up a downloading system for Hoshima that keeps you from having to download a huge bulk file like this one. I'm making it with the RPG Maker XP that I purchased not but a month ago.
I also apologize for using Megaupload's service because I understand that so many people hate it, but it was the only thing I could think of to store something that would allow for remote linking and wouldn't require that someone visit it at least once every 30 days.
So, here's the DL link. Feedback is welcome.

It doesn't run. It opens, doesn't show anything, then closes with an error sound, and doesn't give so much as an error message. |

Alright, so now I've downloaded it. Like Newbie_Power, I'm having issues with actually playing, but the data folders are quite intact so I'm taking me a look-see...
Well, aside from a few tracks, the OST is unchanged from when I bought it a while ago. In many parts a little too echoey or saturated with strings, but not bad. It sounds a little better off my CD but then again I'm using two different media players (Winamp and WMP, the CD on the latter). The new tracks keep to the older style very well imo, except for your fabulous new piece Finger Snappin' Good which is a rather welcome deviation, and of course the Frank Sinatra and Fats Waller pieces you tossed in. But I digress, nice job in the new territory. I like the Searching for the Orb one too.
Graphics are very nice, but I'm getting tired and have nothing more to say. _________________ "Everyone has 200,000 bad drawings in them, the sooner you get them out the better."

Hmm...that's odd. I was hoping it wouldn't require this.
Try downloading the free trial of RPGXP here:
http://www.enterbrain.co.jp/tkool/RPG_XP/eng/
and install it then run the game. See if it works then (it should). If anyone's using the haxored Postality Knights version, then that'd be why it didn't run.
Also, if it's screenshots you want screenshots you shall have.
The Liberty Building Scene (opening)
Hoshima at the Train Station
Hoshima in the small town of Voulant
I tried to stay as close to the original games as I could, while adding in the content that Brian and I have developed in it since the original OHR releases. _________________

Wow, Setu, I'm very impressed. The game seems to have come a long way since its ohr days. _________________ ~PH

Wow, that looks really good. How do the battles and such play out with the RPG Maker, and what of the graphics? Do you draw them all? _________________ ---------------Projects----

RMZ: I wish I could do that well with graphics, but I don't. Just about all the graphics were from various resources on the net of people's work (which I accredited them for). The sprites of Hoshima, Saki, and Dr. Ryu are sprite manipulations that I did and the sprite to Kounnosuke I recolored and redesigned with just the bodily form to work with.
PlanetHunter: Yeah, the project stayed in development since the OHR games were scrapped because Brian and I couldn't just let it die. I am still actively working on this and currently have 35 minutes worth of gameplay (and I'm currently at the scene where Hoshima and Saki are eating lunch at the academy (if you remember that scene from the first game)).
Everyone Else: I think I know what the problem is with the program's execution, so wait until I release the next update and I'll tack on the proper DLL file that I hope should run the game. _________________

You dont need to dl RMXP, just the RTP is needed to run the game (i'm sure it's on the site somewhere... and for some reason i already have it... )
What you have here is a nice start. Although, i'll be frank, the anime-style humour just annoys me. I'm sure other people will take a liking to it, but it's not exactly my cup of tea.
I love the music. The only problem i have is the looping on the battle theme. Maybe it's a problem with looping mp3s (i know i have that problem).
And Hoshima's sprite looks a hella lot like Edward from Full Metal Alchemist. |

Well, it's difficult to render MP3s to have a smooth loopability, but I never considered it to be much to worry about.
Secondly, that IS Hoshima's original design according to the early OHR games which, mind you, were out long before Americans heard of Fullmetal Alchemist, so it's purely a coincidence.
As far as the anime-style humor is concerned, I understand where some wouldn't like it, but if I'm going to have an anime styled game, the humor should follow along the same lines. Also, I'm a big fan of british comedy (I'm a big fan of The Young Ones and Bottom especially) so that would probably be why I enjoy the humor and possibly why only people with that taste in humor will appreciate it.
Thanks for the critique though, Fenix. _________________

Setu: Yeah, I remember it vaguely. The graphics are really nice, I must say. I must find the time to play it, the screenshots really have me curious now. _________________ ~PH

He sure does.
(Please note that I have played the OHR Hoshima game and that I am well aware that he came to be, before Edward Elric.
That, and my inner FMA fangirl isn't at all upset by this similarity ) _________________ "There will always be people who will tell you they hate what you made, or like what you made, and will tell you that what you did was wrong or right."

Just change Hoshima's clothes (hoping that the only appearance similarity is in the sprite). It'll just change what he is wearing to not look as much like Edward, but he will still be Hoshima. _________________
