I've used some NPC over hero layering to get the desired 'partial overhead' effect, but it is not much good in places with OTHER wandering NPCs. The problem is that these NPCs cannot walk 'under' the 'partial overhead'. So just be careful about how you're using them, that's all.

I feel there's a point of too much reality though. I feel this detracts from the topic but I feel that at some point the fine tuning of features to synthesize a survival situation become for too daunting when you focus on something as mundane as this so hard.

Sword of Jade did something similar. It worked.

Blaze, you're missing the point completely. It's hard to hold a gun steady when you're falling asleep.

If I remember correctly, your ammo efficency increases (this only goes into effect with machine guns), since your main character learns to use weapons better from constant use. However, every other stat goes down, such as aim, so at a high level, you would know how to shoot and save ammo, but you would be too weak to hit the target.

Joe Man - I suppose so, but leveling down does seem to give the game more of that "survival" feel and element, and there would be equipment to keep your shaky stats a bit more stable. Avoiding unnecessary encounters would keep you stronger too, I guess it is a bit too realistic, but.. yeah.
