If I join the contest, my game would not be very grand. I'd probably stick to a simpler story-driven game.

Well mine isn't going to be. I'm intending to do a fairly simple one-level adventure. I'm trying to make something I can finish, first and foremost, and something that should be enjoyable to play. At the moment, I'm thinking my map will be about 60x60, and quite a bit of it will be empty.

I like this idea more and more. Not much of an excuse for absence this time, folks Wink

My map is 32x20. I'm pretty sure I could make the same game on a smaller map, though, but the scripting would be trickier. (Hint: if you set your scroll type to "wrap," you can make your map seem as big as you want.)

Another tip: If you're doing the "multiple maps in one" route, turn off the debugging keys, and the map, or it'll be rather obvious what you're doing. Wink

Simon, fbCustom seems to hate me mucking around with working.tmp. Specifically, if it's unlumped when I start, custom hangs; also, changing or deleting files caused it to hang when it tried to lump.

(Edit) Hmm, changing files in working seems to hang it instantly.

It shouldn't be any different to normal OHR - it'll only open the files when it goes into that particular menu, and lump should just include everything. The hangs might in fact be invisible error messages, which the new version I just uploaded should now show, but I don't know what would be causing the actual error, unless some other process had a file locked, maybe?

I have changed the new version so it (a) won't try to lump any files with long names invalid in DOS (although that should only have been a problem if they were subsequently opened with the QB version) and (b) will abandon attempts to read corrupt RPGs sooner. Neither of those would explain your issues, though.

Can you give me a description of the steps needed to cause the problem?

Here's what I did.

1. Started fbCustom.
2. Started Custom in a different directory.
3. Copied graphics files from Custom's working and put them into fbCustom's working (replacing the old files).

I have gotten hangs at other times, too, so it may not be because of the file replacement.

Just thought I'd mention that if you are going to use map-wrapping, remember that NPCs don't work correctly with the edge of wraparound maps; they basically consider it a wall.

Hmm, that's true, and I don't remember if the display problem was ever fixed. In my game, that's not an issue.

Moogle: Does hitting escape when it 'hangs' do anything? I've gotten a 'hang', which I believe is just the "this file is corrupt" or "found such and such unlumed" messages that aren't showing up properly.

Nope, by "hang" I mean it actually hangs.

One week down, four to go. Are we 20% done, yet?

Probably not, in my case, although it's hard to say, given that it's the first time I've attempted an OHR RPG.

Thoughts about scoring: RPGs are marked out of 10 by public vote. Highest and lowest scores discarded, and the rest averaged. Multiply by 10 to get a score of 0-100. Bonus of 10 points for sharing a character. I'm not sure the bug bonus is entirely practical, but I might do something like 1-3 pts per bug to a maximum of 15 pts, at my discretion (and with me being ineligible).

Character-sharing deadline is Saturday 25th Feb, to give other people time to incorprate them if they want. Try to make it something that you have copyright over and that you don't attach conditions to (ie. don't demand a credit). The idea is to make other people's lives easier, so asking them to breach copyright or making it more difficult to use is counter-productive.

I'm pathetically behind on the graphics myself, but with a bit of luck I will manage one set by next weekend.

Two weeks gone, 40% of the way there.

This weekend is the half-way mark. I was hoping to have all my hero graphics done by then, but I'm not sure it's going to happen. On the other hand I am feeling much better today after suffering with a cold for the last week or so, so maybe I'll pick up speed.

My map is done, in rough form - the tiles could use a little sprucing up - and I've worked out most of the story, but that's mostly it so far. I have drawn 2 walkabouts, a custom font and a couple of larger graphics. A long way to go, but I think I'll have something playable by the 15th.

Just to be safe, I have to say that I'm withdrawing from this contest. Even though I can't remember if I entered and I'm too lazy to check at the moment.
