Okay, sounds impossible doesn't it? Your thinking, "there's no way to edit the Hsi file!" "you'd have to use a 'cheat program'" "you'd have to know

how to, and edit the source code somehow."

But rest assured my friends, it can be done!

Okay, there is ONE (minor) set back. The hero's name, i.e the name you

enter in the hero stats menu can not be edited but there's a way round that.

Just call the hero whatever it may be: a mage, a knight, a hamster,

whatever it may be.

But the hero's name that you type each time by hand in a texbox can be

edited, provided there is no backdrops and you leave adequate space.

All you have to do is obey the following conditions:

1/ The textbox you use must be "see through" no crazy colors allowed.

If you want use npcs to create a pattern or maptiles. which get drawn

    behind the see through box.

2/ Now, the following bit will be explained in 13 1/2 days time.

A series of scripts are run next creating npcs like letters,

one at a time on top of each other, diguised as letters.

3/ the order, style and font of these letters are declared at the start of the

game. Use a fancy menu selection screen, you see them at the start

of popular games like golden sun. experienced scripters should have

a fair idea how to do this. (when storing values use global variables

don't forget! those letters could be called into play at any time!

4/ finally, some ideas before I leave you (for 12 days)

(i) since the letters are npcs they respond to tags and the like. so,

foe example When the hero is angry a tag is set and the npcs

can be told by a script to turn red. (and that's only one example!)

(ii) animating letters! this is a bit of a challenge! Remember npcs have

two frames remember! so run a continous script that sets the letter

npcs frames from 0 to 1 and back again.

(iii)

Tips for drawing your own letters:

In my game the max length for the hero's custom name is

8, (two tiles, with 5 pixel wide letters) but it can be made

any way samller or bigger (provided you don't go off the

screen! (which is npc 40 letters back to back mind you!)

the dimensions are 5 by 6 (though you can go a little higher,

but it's risky. lower case Gs and Ys can get in the way)

i find it's better just to draw them in 16 color palette

first, that way you won't be disappointed.

each of the 8 npcs are placed (squeezed) into two tiles.

each tile is 20x20 so you can fit 8 back2back without any

spaces. the good thing about npcs is you can place them

over each other. To remove the "compressed look" i used

slightly different brightnesses and used the put npc

         command to space them apart.

one last thing, for highly experienced scripters this should be a little tricky

but bearable. But for the rest of us i will supply a Hss file (in txt format)

within 13 1/2 days.

Hope this will inspire your scripting skills! bye! _________________ ~PH

Interesting, but it seems kinda like a lot of work for something little. It's also kind of odd to have the hero in the game have a name, but not have that name used in battles or in the menus. While I wouldn't have thought of that (as in, awesome idea), is it really that important to have customizable names? I mean, if the game'll have a good, serious story, it's kind of odd to allow the player to name the character anything, including something like 'Poo Head.' _________________ Preserve OHR history! I dunno. Renameable heroes may sound interesting at first but, but the truth in the matter is that it's just too darn tedious to actually bother with.

James may be adding some sort of text support to the OHR in the future for advanced plotscripters. That would be the time to start thinking about making customisable names (Although I don't know if he'll bother making the actual hero names changable or not). But I think there.... Could be a chance... .... Maybe...?

Anyhow, thread closed. It's not a question...Not really a helpful answer or tip. No real scripts are posted... Nobody will actually bother to do it since it's just a big waste of time in the long run. * Shrug * Anyway....*click* |
