And, yeah, what IM said. Also, there is a front end for VDMS that should be on the same site where you got VDMS that allows you to create shortcuts to run the programs with VDMS. Once you've installed the front end, you can use the pre-made shortcut that TMC (?) made for optimized OHR performance: http://hamsterrepublic.com/ohrrpgce/download.php (somewhere around there)

I don't doubt you know what you're doing, I just didn't want what's her/his face Bis Senchi to do anything without being sure she knew what it was, because with all the help topics, he/she doesn't seem quite oriented with computers, but perhaps it's just plotscripting.

Ack, I knew this would happen... I was just saying that I did include a warning in my post.

ANYWAY, bis_senchi, here is the shortcut I was talking about before: http://hamsterrepublic.com/ohrrpgce/thirdparty/fyrevdms.zip

When you install the front end, unzip that into your ohr folder, and run the new Custom and Game shortcuts to get sound.

Finally I can hear song! That's great! Razz

Does somoene have possible explanations about my other problem ?

When winamp (or any other media player) is launched and when I launch custom.exe (ot game.exe) I can't hear clear music anylonger. The music plays very very slowly.

I has nothing to do with vdms sound because the problem already existed before I install it. I think it may has something to do with another programm because at the beginning I haden't that kind of problem. I could work on my game and listen music at the same time.

I also know that it has nothing to do with the size of an rpg game because when custom launch sample.rpg the music starts to slow too.

The OHR is rather processor intensive under windows, since the various optimizations that James put in to make it run fast under DOS (ModeX, etc.) also make it slower under Windows. There's not much you can do, except maybe find a smaller and less resource intensive media-player. Can't think of any right now, but they do exist.

I understand this but then why can I hear music under windows 98 ?and why can't I do the same under windowsNT?. That's the same version of custom.exe, and in both cases the new performances are active, and as a consequence, I shouldn't be able to hear music at normal speed under both systems.

Both don't have Dos installed and both take care of James emulation improvement (recent versions of custom.exe). Speaking of that, it's true that under WinNT my cursor moves really fast... and I remember myself activating a kind of turbo mode while I was making my game under winNT... that must be the point... (and for a strange reason the turbo cannot be activate as easily as it is under Win98) because for then on I couldn't hear music at normal speed when custom was launched!!!

Does somoene knows how unactivate the turbo mode ? (By the way what is the turbo mode for ?)

Ok, let me correct what I said. It runs slowly in Windows NT or higher. Windows 9x is based on DOS, and so BAM works fine without help, ModeX is peachy, etc.

However, Windows NT and higher don't want programs to directly talk to any of the hardware, so the Dos window needs to emulate some of that stuff. It doesn't emulate sound (thats what VDMS is for), but it does emulate the video hardware (but not to the point of being able to run fullscreen dos progams in a window). It's all this emulation that happens that makes it slow.

As for your mouse, is it fast in all of windows? Or just in custom?

The mouse has a normal speed when I am under Windows but it gets very fast when I am under custom in particular when I place tiles

So do you have any suggestion ?

Well it appears that the turbo mode made cosume enought power to the computer and that's the reason why I can't hear music at normal speed.

I will make tests ans search this way. I may post more specific questions about the turbo mode in a few weeks if I don't manage to solve it by myself.

The game can also speed up on some computers if you minimise game.exe and then o back into it, and the timer mucks up. I wonder if this is a related produce. It is not an intended "turbo mode"

I get the autoexec.nt error too, but not just with the OHR, but with many other programs as well (even Worms Armageddon). So i thought I should paste that text pkmnfrk posted. But when I used the search function to find autoexec.nt it was found in the C:\WINDOWS\repair folder not in "system32". Could this be the problem? Should I move it to system32?

EDIT: I read through the file in notepad and it looked to be just like pkmnfrks text, but in swedish. Maybe it would screw up my swedish windows if I pasted an english text in there...

I had this problem a while ago. I think it was a virus/major bug that caused it. to fix it. Copy (Not cut) Autoexec from the backup folder (Rapair in the case of XP), and paste it in system 32. This will fix the problem. the virus/bug may try to remove it again when you restart your computer.

I found, with autoexec gone, almost all programs that relied on DOS to run did not work.

I doubt XP would let you touch anything in \repair anyway. If it's not in \system32, then just create it. And, the actual stuff that matters won't be in sweedish. Only the comments, which do nothing.

Autoexec.nt sets up a bunch of things that are secret, and known only to the l33tist of haxors. Ok, I lied, but same idea.
