Characteristics of a good horror game:
* A title that fits
* Some very dark scenes (Difficult to pull in OHR)
* Great captures (Dead people, Blood, *lolPenis)
* Slow, gloomy music (High pitched and fast when needed)
* A title screen that drives imagination
* N.B - A story thats interesting, with many twists and turns.
* Sudden shots of things (Mentioned in 'great captures')
Thats some, just to name a few.
A horror game is, for me, one of the most interesting games a person can make. I remember playing purgatory for the first time and thinking 'WTF is going on here?' It was very captivating. The graphics in that game also played a huge role besides the mysterious story. _________________

Quote: | I want a survival horror game where the hero freezes in his tracks suddenly, turns around and slowly looks over his shoulder than says "LOOK OUT BEHIND YOU!" So you, the player, turn and look behind you, and when you turn to look back at the television, the hero is laughing his ass off and going "You TOTALLY fell for it!". |
Or maybe this could happen right before a time where the player really needs to be looking at the screen. So he'll tell you to look behind you, and when you turn back the hero is dead and you get a game over screen. Only players who would not turn to look would be able to get past that scene on their first try. _________________ Locked

I suddenly remembered Fatal Frame: Crimson Butterfly when I looked at my avatar. What really scared me when playing that game was when I was actually face-to-face with a ghost when taking a picture of it. Plus, Japanese horror rocks. _________________ The man who smiles when things go wrong has thought of someone to blame it on.

What is actually scarey about horror games/movies is that it seems like it could actually happen. For example, when watching a slasher film(almost never scarey, but I need an example), one tends to pick out who is going to die next, how, where, ect. However, even after the movie is over, your mind is still picking out spots as such, which leaves you scared afterward. (Think about it; in a horror film, if the murderer's in the house, and the hero starts to walk up the stairs at night when the lights off, you automatically register them as being dead meat on a stick.)
Stress out the player enourmously. Add in several untrustworthy(though innocent)NPCs for them to stress about on top of the story, unrealistic puzzles, enemies, and what is currently happening. _________________ http://www.oddwebsite.com/ddw.php?tjord=11 |
