I hate to sound rude, but I think the general answer will be no thanks.
A lot of us believe in original music, and being a composer myself, I'm on that same wavelength. _________________ SACRE BLEU!

It has a nice selection, but I couldn't get to any of the files. Only problem is that most of it is not really good music to suit an RPG. I know some people would argue the classical and romantic composers (I'm talking the eras.) But I don't think that really fits any games. (For example, TSSE uses Spring as town music, and it is horrendous.) But it's a nice midi collection for music in general.
But as Bena said, original compositions are probably the best way to go. I mean, having this kick ass game is nice, but when it's set to the music of Limp Bizkit and Ludacris, you tend to shy off of it a little (unless that is the idea of the game, a la Shaq Fu or that Michael Jackson game on Genesis who's name I can't remember.) Not that the music is bad, it just tends to not be fitting. (I never said always.) _________________ Calehay |

I often hear an awesome famous song, either in School Varsity Band or on the radio, and say to myself, "Hey. That song would fit great in this part of this story". Isn't that part of what being director is about? You have to get the song that best captures the mood.
Unfortunately, any game that one would want complete claim in creating would need original music. That might be why people are frowning on this now, Venxz. It's not a big deal though, so chin up. _________________ Planning Project Blood Summons, an MMORPG which will incinerate all of the others with it's sheer brilliance...

Of course it matters about setting the mood. But popular music that we all know and love breaks away from the mood itself. I feel this way about a lot of games, and I've always wished that they used a composer to do the music. Of course, if the game has enough redeeming qualities, then it can win my attention back. _________________ Calehay |

cant you agree on anything i said both are great but if! if! you want famous music then go to the site im not saying that original music is dumb because it isnt just that sometimes you need something different. _________________ and for frames like this ya must use the saw tooth picture hanger. |

uhm actually you really don't need a real screen name to become part of this website, thats only if you lose your password.
besides you act way too much like him in your games with all the swearing and nonsensical phrases. also i believe that theres a "rip" of one of his walkabouts in one of your games isn't there? _________________

Wasp/3m/Whatever, it's very easy to get many email addresses. Your whole "one address" argument doesn't work.
...at least, I think that's what you're saying. It's kinda hard to tell.
And back on topic...
Quote: | But popular music that we all know and love breaks away from the mood itself. |
This is only if you use it poorly. When you rip music well, the images/feelings people will get from the song will accentuate the mood you want for the particular map/scene. If you took a song from a video game, you have to know how the song was used and see the level/map/scene it was used in. Then you can make your own level/map/scene fit the song much better.
On a related note, I would say it's better to rip from non-RPGs or from older RPGs that don't have as much emotion/character. With newer RPGs there's often too much emotion attached to some songs, and the identification between a song and story is too strong. For example, if you used Aeris' theme in a tragic moment, nobody would take it seriously. The song would remind them too much of Aeris and take away from the scene (also using FF7 music here at CP is generally not something that will make you popular, but that's another issue).
I'm not going to claim that ripped music is better than original music (except sometimes for comedic purposes), but ripped music can still be very good. OHR House is a great example of that. |
