Well then, how do you choose which 2% of the new games to play? Do you just draw names out of a hat?

I believe JSH said it in his review of FFH. The graphics of a game are what initially draws people in. Those games with well placed graphics and at least show some skill in them will more often than not keep me playing. This is usually because people who put the effort into their graphics will more often than not also be somewhat proficient in other areas, such as design, character development, and gameplay. So basically if the game looks good or at least has a consistent visual style, that'll get me started.

The second is name association. I know there are people who will play a particular author's games just because they liked one of them, or the rest appealed to them. Square made FF4, FF6, Chrono Trigger, etc., and a lot of people will play pretty much anything that comes out of that company based solely on that they liked a few of their games (and are expecting a certain level of quality). If I played OHR house or Thanksgiving Quest and really liked it, I would probably look for other games by JSH, just based on the impression those games gave me.

Another is how well the actual author comes off. In this community, you're not just selling your games, you're selling yourself. If you come off as a complete ass with no respect for others' opinions, and are completely incapable of stringing together a sentance longer than "lol u suk", then you'll get written off as immature, and so will your games (regardless of whether they're good or not). One the other hand, if the impression you leave on others is a good one, then your games will be looked at with a more serious eye.

Finally is word of mouth. If I hear from a few trusted sources or some friends in the community that X game is worth my time, I'll pick it up and play it.

The general rule of thumb is that your first few games will suck. You accept this any try to get better with each game, or you could deny this and not improve at all.

P.S. I think "ages" is a little bit of an exaggeration.

It is actually very easy to tell whether a game is worth downloading from its screenshot, description and author on the gamelist. If people pick uninteresting descriptions or screenshots which make their games look bad, then that is probably because they suck at presentation, and the game actually is bad.

Firstly, sight is the first thing that someone has to tell if your game is worth their time. Even you do it unconsciously. When you are in a video game store/rental place, what makes you want to try a totally new game? Does the music come out of the box? Do you hear the voice acting? Does the battle system have a sample on the back of the box? No. The only thing that you can go by is the pictures, and the description. The Gamelist limits you a bit by having only one screenshot, but that just means that you must choose the most interesting one.

And btw, why do you keep attacking the Mad Cacti?

I think Squall understood what you meant, it's just that when you create your first game (unless you are one of those "prodigies", then you probably don't know exactly how long you really are going to spend on your game.
