I like Harry Potter because it's not just a story ABOUT harry Potter, it's also a story about the world around him.....
plus, the twists rock!
The movies really disappoint me.......... _________________ The man who smiles when things go wrong has thought of someone to blame it on.

I think the reason Harry Potter is so popular is that it's easily accesible to kids. (I mean you can read it easily.) Of course, I still think the Redwall series kicks it's ass in storylines, (But that's also just me.)
Think of the "adult" fantasy books you see nowadays. They tend to focus on small, teensy elements that would bore some kid out of his mind. "Children's" fantasy takes away some of the things we find in other fantasy novels, and brings it to our children in an enthralling, readable format.
As for the Harry Potter series, I find it better than some crap you see out there today. By no means the best, but interesting nonetheless. _________________ Calehay |

Great. I can't wait to see it. The HP series sure does give children book fantasy/ mystery writers something to shoot for. It sets the bar fairly high at least. So if you can top it, all the power to ya'.
Also: The thing I don't like about HP (or any series as well written) is the fanatics. My little brother read all 5 damn books 5 times each. I lost interest in count there, so maybe more. There is no reason to read any book more times than you need to. Read it until you get it is my philosophy, and most people can get it in their first read through. My mother has read them all several times as well... And I thought she was a reasonable person. *shakes head* _________________ Planning Project Blood Summons, an MMORPG which will incinerate all of the others with it's sheer brilliance...

J.K. Roling is getting lazy in her writing, if you ask me. But who's asking me? _________________ Planning Project Blood Summons, an MMORPG which will incinerate all of the others with it's sheer brilliance...

I digress (Is digress the word I'm searching for? Or possibly disagree? I think they're synonyms, but digress sounds more... Interesting.).
Off the top of my head I can think of three reasons:
1) One can learn tricks for one's writing (Not s' much with Rowling, but Wodehouse and others...)
2) The author often hides "Easter eggs" that provide clues to the person who already knows the story about what may happen next, in other books, or give clues about the world.
3) It's enjoyable--which, in my opinion, is reason enough. _________________ "I do believe your Squid exists. I really do, you know?" |

Yes, digress works (since you seem to be digressing from our plainly stated opinions)
In any case, we're using the word "Great" to describe Harry Potter books. When I think of great, I don't think think "oh, the book is enjoyable", I think "oh, this book is a master among tales; it overwhelms me".
Quality books or not, I don't respect the author. Mainly because she is somewhat of a sellout and corporate whore. She is an AUTHOR, not a writer.
And personally, if I don't respect the author, it's hard for me to enjoy their writing. _________________ SACRE BLEU!

I wasn't s' much talking about Potter, I was talking about writing in general. _________________ "I do believe your Squid exists. I really do, you know?" |

"Castle Paradox - Alas! X-rated cop!" -- this is great.
Anyway, I hope Surlaw is joking. (It's hard to tell sometimes.) It's dumb to hate popular things. _________________
