I'm none too experienced with CGing my art. I can make drawings into sprites just fine, but when it comes to making it look good, I really need more practice. Here's my attempt at CGing my character sketch for Sasha from Deviant Hearts:

Before

After

Your comments/critiques are welcome, as always. Sasha's in-battle sprite can be seen here.

Very good transition. It honestly looks like that was harder to pull off than it looks.

Okay, here's another one. I have all the characters drawn out already. I'm just CGing them now.

Before

After

Alyssa, who is not in any of the current screenshots. Come to think of it, I haven't done any of her graphics yet. If I had purple hair, I'd do it like that. Heck, if I even had dark enough black hair. I like that style.

Intriguing backgrounds, how were they made? You have a good gradient technique, but I think you need to work on shade conformity just a tad, as in, the shading needs to represent the people's shapes better. But in all, its not half bad, just keep at it.

Not to sound like I'm putting down the work, but I suspect that the backgrounds are probably presets in whatever program St. Ajora's using. It blends great with the artwork though.

Sorry if I'm wrong about the backgrounds. :S

The faces look a bit skiwgly, which is very wierd in the cg'd form. Try cleaning that up before you color.

Veld, the background for Sasha is just a gradient with the tiles filter. Alyssa's is a solid fill with a pinwheel-textured fill on top of it. Same technique with Baram's:

Before

After

This is definitely my favorite so far, and not just because he's Baram! Take a look at those hauntingly expressive eyes in the finished product. Yes, I know that I didn't use that style with the other characters' eyes. And no, he doesn't wear a mask in the game, it's the Amano style of making the character look completely different in the sketches than the actual sprites. Kefka, for example. Actually, he doesn't even use twin knives in the game. He looks a lot better that way, though.

Thanks for the feedback. Veld, I used your technique, grays in a multiply layer, and it's the best way to shade I've found so far. Any pointers on how I can place it better?

Lethal, I'm pretty sure I don't know what "skiwgly" means, but I know it's not a word. Can you be any more specific?

Edit: Baram's walkabout sprites can be seen in these screenshots: 1 2 3

Doublepost!

Before

After

Wade, the other hero in the battle screenshot. For some reason, I'm not nearly as satisfied with this one. I can't put my finger on it, but something's really awkward with his face. I do like how the hair carried over from the pencil, though.

And once again I've completely changed the style on the eyes.

Edit: And I forgot what Wade wears when I was drawing him, it seems.

By squigly, he means the lines aren't smooth. The lines have bumps in them, which is especially appearant on the face in the first image.

You have a one-of-a-kind style, but the nose is a little dissagreeable in some. Kind of squished. However, if this is the style you want to stick with, then that's cool. "Beauty is in the eye of the beholder..."

Either way, it seems like these get considerably better every time you do them.

Like Velduanga said up there, you need to make the shading fit the body. Curves, bumps, wherever light hits. It's a bit hard to explain for yours truely. To get better at this, just observe other artwork closely and even observe real life closely.

I like the style for shading Oookay...

actually, I think you did a job of translating into CG, especially the second one you posted

Oh, "squiggly." Yes, my mouse hand is not nearly as steady as my drawing hand. I'll probably redo Sasha's CG. I'm not really satisfied with it and now that I've done the others I notice dozens of ways she could look better.

Veld, maybe you could try your hand at one of these..? I'd love to see what you do with these sketches. I personally think they're rather good sketches; it's my CG that needs work. If not, any pointers you have would be more than welcome.

I really do dig those pics. Maybe you should use them as avatars for the ingame characters... whenever one of them is speaking you show a backdrop with the pic on.

I have a suggestion, miss Ajora. You might concider purchasing a Graphics Tablet. They cost around 80 to 100 dollars, but they are a lot of fun and a lot neater. Neater as in, it'll be more like you are drawing on paper than on the computer, but that exactly what you're doing with a Graphics Tablet. A mouse is just no way to go... No, no, no...

I don't really like the backdrop approach, but a "floating head" avatar could be kinda cool if I can figure out how to put it on a textbox.

I'll work with that when I get home.
