Personaly i've never really used Me or 2000, but I can I'm pretty pleased with the way98 works for me. It rarely crashes for me, and thats the same thing I've heard from just about anybody else. Thought it's no XP, it's still a great OS in my opinion.

I actually almost agree with Fyre's graph. The one change I would make is to switch 2000 and XP, as I've found 2000 to be faster and stabler than XP. I have actually had XP bluescreen on me once or twice before, whereas 2000 never did anything of the sort.

I agree. Though XP does have some features I like (the interface is a lot smoother). But 2k loads much faster for me, and I don't really like the bells and whistles anyway...

I love XP. But I truly feel that win98 is the best OS for OHRRPGCE. It runs on most PC's without requiring VDMS. And it supports DOS great!

Just because it runs DOS well (since it doesn't emulate DOS; it's the real thing with 98) doesn't mean it run itself well. 98's crashed on me more times than I can count, but XP's been good to me so far.

I now use Debian GNU Linux exclusively for all my work *except* programming the OHR. I still use my dinosaur Win 98 box to do that, since the OHR runs too slow in DOSEMU or DOSBOX on Linux.

I do have access to a computer at work that can run the OHR full speed under Linux/DOSBOX (Dual processor AMD Athalon 2000) but it is (mostly) for work, not play, so I don't program the OHR on it.

As for various problems/complaints with the different versions of Windows, I have found that all Windows 95 and NT are about equally crappy, and Windows 98 2000 and XP are all about equally adequate. Most of the problems people blame on their versions of windows are really mostly the fault of bad hardware drivers. If you find a version of Windows that works reliably with your own hardware, stick with it and be happy :)

Yeah, this topic is proof that it isn't as much the OS as the person's personal experience with it. Except ME, that sounds like crap from almost everybody.

What happened with Me was that Microsoft attempted to make a "bridge" between the 9x series and NT, and it didn't work out too well. That's what happens when you try to be compatible with everything and stable with nothing.

Which is why Windows XP itself is so stable, as it's doing it's job well, and not trying to be backwards compatible with the inherently broken 9x line, and not having DOS intertwined with it's kernel, either.

Debian, James? DEBIAN!?!?

Note: If any of you want to try out Linux, my first suggestion would be Knoppix, followed by Red Hat, and then Mandrake. Do not attempt to install Debian unless you are familiar with Linux or don't care for your sanity.

It should be noted that Microsoft now avoids mentioning Windows Me whenever possible.

Red Maverick Zero mentioned somewhere back there that he didn't need VDMS before, but then when he had Windows ME he needed it. I have Windows ME now, and I can't seem to figure out how to get it to play BAMs at all. VDMS doesn't seem to do much of anything (the initial thing you're supposed to run, the vcredist or something like this, doesn't run). I can edit and play games just fine without VDMS except the BAMs. RMZ, what did you do with ME for BAMs?

PS: By the way, everyone seems to hate Windows ME, but it has never done anything terrible to me. In fact, this is the first problem I've had with it (not being able to hear BAMs). Then again, I don't do much with my computer I suppose. I liked DOS on my old computer. I kinda miss the text-based set-up of back then, and have yet to find a word processor that I like better than Wordperfect 5.1 for DOS.

Right-click CUSTOM or GAME and pick "Run with VDMS". That's all.

The following is from the download site for VDMSound:

1) Very important - get VCREDIST.EXE from http://telia.dl.sourceforge.net/sourcef...redist.exe (mirror at http://umn.dl.sourceforge.net/sourcefor...redist.exe) and install it. It should ask you to reboot when it's done.

I guess maybe I don't know how to install this? I thought execution files were simply meant to be run, but double clicking this file and/or using 'Run...' command when opening the start menu to try to use this does nothing. I thought maybe it was just opening or installing or whatever very slowly, but it doesn't even show up on the task manager.

To be fair, I did not attempt to download and install the actual VDMS program, because I could not get this first step to work out.

That is the VDMS for non-XP or 2000 versions of windows. The newer (better) ones are on the main VDMS website, but they dont work on the lower OS's.

But I'm using Windows ME. Does that count as a 2000 model, so that I can use these 'better' versions of VDMS? If not, what can I use? It seems that Red Maverick Zero has managed to use VDMS somehow...
