Characters should die based on a lot of things. If they are a solider character fighting a war, then have them die in battle. If they are a heroine she should die dramatically. Depending on the "Character" should determine the "Death". You don't make the pretty lil princess die facing a band of horrible soliders, it just isn't in her "character".

ah, sorry about that.

To me its neutral. It can get pretty annoying at times to see that a character dies and it turns out to be your best one, but thats why i usually try to level out my characters. that way i wont have to worry about a characters death.

usually though if its a movie death then you can almost always tell that that specific guy is gonna come back at some point (unless he appears in a dream telling you that he is dead)

Some of us like making female character's that aren't the stereotypical hero's girlfriend/damsel in distress. Hero's girlfriends and damsels in distress suck. They're just...pathetic.

Strong characters, multi-dimensional characters, they can be female, too. Adept fighters, yep. I don't know about the little world you live in, Red, but this one has real people.

Woah, calm down. I was joking. Neutral

But the truth is, the whole "I'm a female warrior trying to break free of the shackles of opression and prove I'm just as capable as a man" is way way waaaaaaay overdone in the RPG genre. It's old.
Another reason this is a stupid thing to begin with is most of these games take place in a middle age setting, and I highly doubt there were any valiant knights suiting up and riding into battle that were women. Not that all games have to be 100 percent realistic, but come on. Rolling Eyes

(and don't use Fuck's name in vain)

The best way is to just leave the whole question of sexual roles out of it. A character is how a character is, and that shouldn't be determined by gender stereotypes, whatever side of the extreme it's on.

then again... not everyone is lucky enough to have hooters.

but there is a reason why females in games are traditionally soft and sweet. a soft and sweet man in a game usually comes off either wussy or gay (depending on who's looking at the character), so guys are nearly universally required to have some kind of edge about them. a woman with an edge (especially in real life) just winds up either aloof... or acting like my older sister (don't get me wrong, i love her. but if we weren't related, i'd have nothing to do with her).

that's not to say that it's impossible to characterise women any other way. only that even most commercial games don't seem to have figured it out.

I feel like that statement is more indicative of the unfortunate nature of the stereotypes that exist in our culture than it is the way men and women can/should be portrayed in RPGs. That said, it may be harder to create a character that contradicts cultural stereotypes because players are going to be looking at that character more closely. However, I feel that if it's well done, it will still work. In the end, having a character appear differently than intended is the fault of the game designer.

Of course, how many RPGs have actually had good character development?
