On my new game I'm making a game for the Halloween contest (MC: Tsunami City) my computer doesn't play BAM, so should I just have no music, or just randomly choose music and hope to get lucky.

Ask someone else who can hear bams to pick out music for you.

Find some midis that would work well for you, convert them into bams, and then either hope they sound okay or send them to someone who can hear them.

Run the game in this. (DosBox - it's a DOS emulator) It's slow, but you can change that with handy keys built in. I'll get to it a little later.

Its instructions are confusing sometimes, so just do what I say:

After you've installed the program, run it. There'll be two windows opened; don't close any of them. Go into the one you can type in (the other window is just for reports)

type exactly this:

mount c c:\

This sets it's sights on your C drive, so you can talk about YOUR computer, instead of its weird Z drive.

then type:

c:

[now you're on your C drive; so now you can look for your game]

Now type:

chdir [type in the location of the folder your game's in. You don't have to type in c:\ at this point]

example: chdir rpg

[my rpg folder's right in my C drive]

it'll change the prompt line to: c:\rpg [or your location]

Then, to play your game, all you have to do is type in "game" [unless you've renamed it to go right to your own game]

If you just want to listen to BAMs, instead of typing Game, type Custom, and import a bam from IMPORT. On the import screen, just having your highlight on the file will play it.

Sure, it takes a minute, but unless VDMS works, it's the only way I've found.

I mentioned making the game go faster -because it's default settings are for true DOS- Press F8 to increase FPS (can only go to 10)--F7 to DEcrease fps--, and F12 to increase cpu speed --F11 to DEcrease cpu speed--. At about 1500 cpu speed, I believe, the music will begin to skip, so 1000's a good range. After that, you're only dealing with very minimal decrease in game speed.

Hope I've helped. :p

In answer to the question: I think it's a bad idea. Music, Art and Story are the most important elements in a game. Even if the game's easy, people will still like it for these elements. Music is something that sticks more than any other thing. A study was done a couple years back, where a large group of people was seperated into two rooms. Both were looking at a game. One of the groups experienced the game with full sound. The other group didn't have any.

The group who didn't have the game with sound, gave it VERY poor reviews. Even though the graphics were cutting edge (beautiful, in fact).

The group who had the sound (this includes a full music track) gave it RAVE reviews.

Sound is a good thing : ) It would take a gun to my head to not put music in a game.

Put down that gun!
