If you ask me....

Ripping music is OK since a majority of ripped music in games is placed perfectly. Doing this can make even the crappiest games somewhat
worthwhile.

Ripping graphics can be ok depending on what graphics you rip. Ripping weapon graphics, hero graphics, and walkabout graphics; OK.
Ripping maptiles isn't so good seeing that maptiles are painfully easy to make once you get the hang of it.

like somebody already said, ripping music is ok as long as it is used well, not everyone is as good as Setu with music, so give them the break.

as for ripping graphics is ok for educational purposes(to learn how they are made) and it also depends on how you rip them(some people are crappy in doing so, including myself) so I do it pixel by pixel to get the feel on style. Fen is great at ripping all of the graphics, even though he became so good at doing his own graphics.

in other words, ripping graphics to learn from them is ok for me.

I don't get it. Everyone here puts a game author down if they rip the graphics, telling them they should take the time to learn to draw instead of just stealing from someone else. Now, everyone seems to be saying that ripping music is a ok because no one here knows how to write music.

Ok... So here's an idea: why not take the time to learn how to compose music? It isn't like it's some kind of arcane art that only a select few are capable of mastering. There are rules and ways to use notes just like there are rules for using colors and shading. Sure, it takes a genius to write music like Beethoven, but with a little bit of time, I bet anyone here could be writing decent tunes for their games.

Really? Seems to me like a lot of OHR games have pretty poorly placed music.

Actually, on the telling people to learn to compose music bit: humans are visually based beings, we use the sense of sight far more and far better than any other sense. I know that, at least for me, just thinking up a semi-original tune is far harder than thinking up a semi-original character design, and I think that might be attributable to the fact that humans get far more from sight than from sound. Not saying that music isn't important, not at all, but it's way harder, at least for me, to create.

I'm with Me on this one. I myself have great difficulty writing any music, and when I do get a halfways decent tune, I usually mess it up really badly and have to just write down the melody and put it in reserve. The difficulty of it really turns me off of it, since whenever I do it I don't feel myself getting any better. Also, to note, I've read up on musical theory, and I haven't noticed much difference at all.

Anyway, I'm against ripping music, yes - I'm not against using free domain - or whatever it's called - music. It's not nearly as fulfilling for the game creator as writing their own music, but it works for the end user/player, usually.

I actually find composing music far easier than drawing graphics. In fact, I suck at graphics. However, am I wrong in saying that if I released a game with ripped graphics (or even public domain graphics like the ones that come from the much maligned RPGmaker) everyone here would trash the game? (And don't point to Fenrir's game as an example of something with ripped graphics that everyone loves, that was supposed to be a tribute, after all.) So, I've spent a lot of time working on graphics, and believe me, it's been painstaking getting my pixelation up to even a slightly below average level. Why shouldn't we expect the same for music?

I guess when you get right down to it, I don't really mind if graphics are ripped either, as long as it's done well. It's the double standard that pisses me off. I mean, saying that we should cut people who rip music some slack while continuing to scorn ripped graphics because that's "the reality", that's just crap.

Bah, you're all arguing over dead horses here.

I think people should stop ripping game systems and storylines. Really. I'll take a good, original game with ripped graphics and music over standard OHR fare any day.

But back on the dead subject, I don't really like ripping at all. I've ripped music in the past, but that doesn't mean that I condone it. In my 'serious' games I've always asked the musician's permission. As for ripping graphics, I think that's a bigger concern to OHR people because most OHR people can't hear the music anyway. And when they do, it's horribly converted anyway; so most sane people turn it off.

Actually it was to save time. Otherwise it would have taken 3-4 years to complete the game.

After doing some stuff, I realized something:

Music sounds much better when you have
inspiration. I learned this when I tried to
compose the theme music for Tortemona's
cave and came out with a pile of rhythmic
garbage since I had nothing to work with.
Perhaps this is the reason why music making
is so hard (or perhaps I just suck at making
music).

Actually, I think Veld did a pretty damn good job on that OST. He has a style that reminds me a lot of Noriyuki Iwadare (Lunar SSSC, Grandia)

That is a good point. I think ripped music and graphics should be rated equally.

This thread, and the review in point, was posted way back in January. It is now September, so roughly 9 months ago. It did not have original music at that point in time, nor did it for quite some time after. So your current original music obviously does not apply to a complaint about a review written when it was all ripped music.
