An optimized configuration for DOSBOX for perfect emulation on high-end machines, and decent emulation on 1Ghz machines.

Note as mentioned in the manual, the only thing you need to do is over/underclock DOSBOX so you achieve optimal performance on that end. I can't do anything about this, since DOSBOX does not auto-detect your processor speed.

Download at the link below.

James, I'd appreciate if you could host this on the OHR page.

I am on a 1.5GHz P4 machine with Win XP, and I didn't notice any difference with the VDMSound shortcut, because Game.exe with VDMS runs full speed on my machine.

I just tried out the configuration, and compared it to the default configuration. I got a vast speed increase, and no popping sounds, I highly recommend this to all users of DOSBOX!

in linux i notice very little difference. graphic editing in custom is a little quicker.
why do you have "output=overlay"? on my system this makes things blurry and has no speed advantage over 'output=surface'

1 Ghz is no longer high end? DANG! My 300 mhz machine must be like 10 years behind. There's no way I could use dosbox. But nevertheless, good job!

It improved performance on my machine.

neo: what kind of graphics card do you have on linux? ATI or nVIDIA?

junahu: yeah, 1ghz is low-end. 3ghz is about to become standard in a month or two, I don't think you can even buy 1ghz processors anymore new.

Why doesn't the navigation (CD folder/file/so-forth) go past three? I type in Cd Our Folders and it says it can't get in. Why is this?

(note: the path is C:\Windows\desktop\Our Folders\Dantheman\)

That's because DOS doesn't support spaces in the pathname. It's actually (more than likely) OurFol~1 or similiar - what you need to do:

1. Start up DOSBOX with OHRBOX
2. cd windows
3. cd desktop
4. dir ou*

Now look for the directory name. it will be shortened to 8 characters. You will have to use that. "dantheman" will probably be shortened, aswell.

I really do not suggest running the OHRRPGCE off desktop folders, as it causes more problems than need to happen. it should be in it's own folder in C. This can also cause glitches when directories are so deep that it exceeds the 64(?) character limit of a path.

Ok, obviously either

A) My computer is too much of a piece of crap to run dosbox or
B) Dosbox is too much of a piece of crap to run on my computer (not this one since I don't want to be flamed)

I tried running dosbox before OHRbox came out and that didn't work, so I'll just leave it. Until I get my laptop then.......

ATI (Radeon). OpenGL supports it and i get good framerates with 3d games, but this seems to not be the case for DosBox (opengl/openglnb are actually hugely slower than surface or overlay.).
in any case the bottleneck is elsewhere -- i can even set scaler to "advmame3x" with no perceptible change in speed(despite the fact that it's drawing 9x as many pixels).

DOS uses the same format for translating folders or files with over eight letters. Simply take the first six letters and add a ~1 for the first file it reads with those six letters, ~2 for the second one, and so on.

I forgot to say this: DOSbox COMPLETELY stopped working on my computer.

Edit: I meant OHRbox.

That might be the problem right there. ATI has lackluster support for Linux drivers, to put it nicely. They haven't caught up to nVIDIA in the Linux driver field and don't seem to want to at the current time.

I'm using a nVIDIA GeForce 4 MX 440 SE (PCI) for reference.
