Step up and talk about the subject. What are your thoughts on ripping music? Good, bad? Weigh the good with the bad too to make a strong argument.

i remember when i joined Zantezuken, they were having this arguement about this very subject that had already lasted 5 weeks and it died about a month before Zante closed down.

I say ripping is bad. But using the rips as examples but not using them is good.
Take the general format of a FF6 sprite, many people used it as an example and now, you see many walkabouts with the FF6 eyes.

I based all my walkabout drawings on FF5 walkabouts, and over the years, i've improved on it and... well.... you will see where it's at whenever i find IM and ask him for a bit of webspace for a website.

1. Don't rip from popular sources (ie FFH vs. Trailblazers. Trailblazers sounds original because 80% of people who play it won't recognize the tunes).

2. If you rip, that's not an excuse to place the music poorly. My big gripe in OHR games is people never seem to manage to use music to set the mood, they just hit "Map Background Music: 04" or whatever and leave it.

3. If you know of original music, us it instead. The Stop demo doesn't have a single song composed by me in it, yet it all sounds relatively original. You'd be suprised how many back-water midi composer sites that nobody has heard of are more then willing to let you use their songs.

Yeah, that's my gripe. All my games have original music I swiped from people all over the interent (except the one DDR song in OHR-Date, but...its when you PLAY DDR DANG IT). It isn't hard to find original midis on the internet, believe me.

I'm hoping to eventually be able to create my own BAMs, but music isn't the highest priority right now, and get this; some of the songs I ripped are inspiring stages. Beethoven Virus = Opera House with destroyable balconies! Even if I learn BAM, I'm leaving that song in (might remix it a bit, not sure though).

I think it'd be cool if people at least remixed the MIDI's they rip from so familiar tunes can become new songs. I mainly got this idea from ARFENHOUSE 3, since a remix of Legend of Zelda 2's dungeon is played inside the moon. I'm pretty sure he found the MIDI like that, but it was a cool song and has original content, though in a serious game, you might have to say who remixed it if it's not public domain. In fact, I think all song rips should have a "songs ripped from this" in the credits.

I personally suck at making music. On and off the computer. So I consider the hardest task is to find music to rip that can set the mood of my game. I have used the "setting the mood" technique quite frequently for like boss fights in the Mr.Triangle series and in HQ1 and HQ2. I like ripping music because sometimes, other people have written music for a scenario you yourself have came up with and can't find the right song for. So naturally you can turn to a ripped song and use it. It's not because it's more convienent, it's because I suck at making music.

I think ripping is okay as long as you don't go so far as to steal

However, after a while it becomes kind of redundant and it gets hard to find new music to rip unless you use the same ripped bams for every game.

On the other hand, composing can be equally as hard. Everytime I get the idea for a cool tune, by the time I begin to boot up the computer, gone, gone like the wind........

When I rip music for my games, I'll never use any music from other games like FF6 where everyone will recognize it.
I edit the music that I use, sometimes I slow it down, speed it up, and change the instruments that create the song. Then since the song usually ends, I'll add a few extra notes at the end of the song that makes it loop correctly. This is what I do...as well as composing my own music.

I don't think people should rip music from games we already have heard the music from. Originality always turns out the best.

I've been trying not to rip from other games lately. I've pretty much downloaded a bunch of punk and ska midis and then used them. That's what a lot of MTSAs had and Halloween Quest. But with a game like MegaMan X4 RPG I had to rip from the game. But, I'm trying to rip from different sources, not from games anymore.

Eh, I rip music when I'm absolutely too lazy to form another soundtrack, especially for a fan game (which explains why Mr. Original Music Composer ripped tracks for .hack//OHR Raspberry! ). If you're going to rip music, then at least make sure that you place it appropriately. That's all I really have to say on the matter.

I find it annoying when your listening to something you've never heard before, and then it cuts to the most memorable tune from FF7. If you're going to rip music, it should probably not be too popular. Really, I think that original music is the way to go. (I probably say that because I love Nobuo Uematsu and can't stand hearing BAMs of his music...(shiver.)

If you're going to rip, make it obvious; rip the whole song, either by finding a midi of it and doing a midi2bam, or by writing it out using notate or pcpiano. Don't just write a new song and use parts of another one, like some rap artists are fond of doing. Also, if you're going to include one or more ripped songs, state somewhere that they are indeed this song from that game, either in the game credits or in the text file that goes with it, and it might be nice to include where you got the midi from, if you converted it from a midi.
