When/How did u first know about CP/OHR?

For me, it was August 1999. I remember because I was really annoyed for finding it at the very end of my summer break, which is when I would have had the most time to work on a game...

...and the slacker within has kept me from releasing my own project still. However, to be fair, Magisteral was not my first project.

For myself... it was about 4 years back. The release was old and didnt look anything like it does today... well the names and stuff in the menu were changed and other minor things. James has put a bunch of new features on aswell since then. Happy

I found at a site called dosgamesarchive.org or .com im not sure which one... but that was the site.
I took it into my home... embraced it in my arms... and made the biggest load of <censored> junk there ever was seen. Ha ha ha!
Nowadays... Ive improved. Just take a look at winterfold Rolling Eyes

Ok. I read all of yours. Now it's your turn! :flamedevil:

I was introduced to the OHR and Hamster republic by my good friend, Minnek. He showed me the game he made with it, and I had been fooling around with map designs and game ideas for since I was 8. Naturally this was a pivotal moment. I nearly wet... Oh you don't wanna know.

Anyway, I worked with it for a little over 4 years this month actually. Everything a newb does starts out as crap, as you all well know, so I don't have to explain that part. My original game still lives here at CP and was on Operation OHR for a while before I even knew about CP. And that brings us pretty much to the present. I always looked over Minnek's shoulder to see what he was working on the computer. I think I saw a good portion of the Zant days, and Maybe Renzo and didn't have much of an interest at the time. Then I forgot. Minnek and I were in Computer programming class at the beginning of this year, and that is when I first saw Castle Paradox. I asked how I could join. My intentions were arrogant, but I was (and still am) a fool. I quickly learned to adore pretty much everyone here. You are all like family now. XD

Sorry if that was long. But it has stuff about Minnek in it. You might want to read it again... XD

Castle Paradox wasn't all that difficult to locate... all I had to do was pay a visit to the Official Hamster Republic web page.

After all, that's where I find the majority of my OHR-related links... JOY!

As for the OHRRPGCE itself, I found it during my epic quest for a new RPG maker. Prior to the OHR, I experimented with RPG Maker 95 (which proved too craptacular) and Verge (which I couldn't program worth **** for).

When I did find the OHRRPGCE, however... I almost gagged.

4 map limitation?... HUH?
Final version to be commerical?... WHAT?
Those features don't look great...
And what the hell is a BAM?

So I left it without a second glance... figuring I was much better off with Verge. After all, Verge was much more powerful, flexible and offered more features than the OHR... and it was FREE! What could go wrong?

Well, that's when I learned how crash-happy Verge was. Forget about the stupid flame-throwing dragon on your tails... the Page Fault Error screen is always your mightiest foe. And it always wins... always. Rat bastard!

Needless to say, I tried several game engines after that... (Sphere, Sprite, Toolkit, etc.) and wasn't the least bit impressed. If it wasn't the crappy interfaces, lack of support and documentation, jackass developers... it was always the evil errors/engine glitches. Yes, the Page Fault Error screen of death found its way back to me... (Sphere even managed to freeze my computer mere seconds after opening).

In a last bid resort, with all available (seemingly) options dragged out and with nothing left to lose, I crawled my way back to the Hamster Republic page.

Fine, I thought to myself. I'll try the "lost rodent" demo. I'll see just what this engine is capable of.

Hey, this is pretty damn good.

Well, yeah. Bob the Hamster sold me pretty much instantaneously. And it's still one of the best games for the engine. I don't know what I'd do without ol' Bob and James. =p

Now, I've watched other game engines pretty much crash and burn (Verge has about 12 alternate versions of its engine, few archives of older games and tons of compatibility issues), the OHR has continued to thrive and grow. I'm still impressed with the Hamster Republic's game maker and that's why I'm still using it today.

About two years ago, I stumbled upon the OHR while I was trying to look for ways to program games. After being in way over my head (since the only language I knew how to program in back then was Graalscript), I began to use the OHRRPGCE. I stayed up late that night creating what would be the second or third crappiest game of all time, but also watching my dreams come to life.

God, didn't we already have one of these forums? Meh. Let's see if I can still remember.

One day, around 5 years ago, now I am not sure, I was recently introduced to the web, and finally getting the nick of the information. Now, I really like Final Fantasy 6, and Earthbound, and I was kind of creating a mix of the two in my head. I needed a RPG-Engine. I'm surprised that I even knew what it meant.

I looked one up, and found O.H.R.R.P.G.C.E. on the Hamster Republic website. I was kind of freaked out by the titles, if they were on back then, but I downloaded it, but was too confused, and I remember four maps, so...

Anyway, through out my life until 2002, I searched for more engines, but OHR was really easy, and I kind of got the hang of it.

Then I found a link to Castle Paradox. I didn't join right away, but I remember seeing old names like Seth, and the Lone Chimarea, or summin'. I joined in May 2003, and 'til this day have not released anything, but I going, I just have a problem with graphics, and well... Sure...

I started using OHR in 1998. Of course that's a lie and I probably started later than that. I started using Zantetsuken in 2000, where I soon was elected president. I then led the peoples of the community to Renzokuken, which had a good run but was ultimatly pooped on. I soon heard an announcement from IM that there was a new OHR site in town so I turned in my keys.

I found the OHR about... January 2002, when I found DosGames.com. Whoa, that site was a goldmine of thousands of shareware dos games, the only sort of games I played or owned. I looked in the 'game creation utilities' section, and found about 5 programs....

Well, I tried the one that had a 10/10 rating (Called ZZT or something), and found that it was the worst crap I'd ever seen. I think it would have been poor even by early 1980's standards, and to be fair thats probably when it originated, but it was absolutly unusable. Almost EVERYTHING is hard coded except map design and textboxs. After looking for 30 minutes and not even figurring out how to get to some sort of editor, I deleted it.

Back at DosGames, I decided I didn't like the look of any of the other engines. Some sounded terrible from the descriptions and had high ratings, and some sounded slightly more bearable with low ratings. I tried the OHR, and got a link to the gamelist on O:OHR.

I mightn't have continued if it weren't for one game: The title "The Darn Most Insane Game For PC Ever", by Foofeynono, caught my eye. I thought 'Oh yeah? I'll be the judge of that' and downloaded game.exe. Everything else follows from there. (Heheh, one spammer born from another)

I hung around the Helpme boards for a long time, after mastering plotscripting in about a week by asking a large amount of questions, then joined Zant, which eventually led me to spend all my time posting instead of making games. I took me almost a year to release a game, and to this day, have not released a single serious/worthwhile game. All I do is plotscript and answer questions.


I don't think that stating how we found CP is all that relevent... but I knew about it since it was formed, I just didn't bother joining/posting regularly until about half way through last year. That's why theres a large post diference between me and top poster (but fear not, I'm catching up. spamspamspam) : P

i found the ohr in 98 via a search for 'free game engines', didn't talk on the messageboards till 99, when i started working w/ komera on wingedmene. in 00 i made &and and ohrrpgce monthly.

Seems like only yesterday I guess. I was in like 9th grade and now I'm going into my senior year. Anyways, an old friend of mine, BenJi kept rambling on and on about this thing he claimed he "made". Which at the time I believed him, for whatever reason. Anyways, I got a copy from him and had no idea what hamsterrepublic was. But later on, he said something about it. I found Hamster Republic, and thought, of good, a place where people can play my games and give me feedback. Turns out it was just a place to post them and download others' games. About 2 months of that I stumbled on CP in like 2003, last summer.. And lucky for me, the 48 Hour Contest started up. I guess that's my earliest memory of CP, and maybe that's why I like that contest so much. Eh, I owe a lot to the OHR and I have met friends I will have for the rest of my life. Dispite the fact that some of us got off to a rocky start, I guess I have made more friends that way. Tch, I remember when CN spent like 2 hours calling me a dumbass the first couple times I was on CP. But everyone starts out differently.

I found the OHRRPGCE approximately four years ago whilst looking for documents and files related to Final Fantasy, programming, and games in general. One day, James Paige's website came up on the search engine, and so I went there to check it out. I downloaded and played Wandering Hamster and rather liked it, and I began experimenting with CUSTOM and produced a few games that were highly unsuccessful, such as Ancient Warriors, Eternity, and the flop to end all flops, Sylvan Song. I also made a sort of punk humor game Eternal Warriors, which no longer exists anywhere but in the memories of those who remember it, thanks to my rashly deleting it from Operation: OHR's databases, and a game that never was released which I named (coincidentally) Eternity. The only similarity that the first bore to the second was that the main character had blue hair. Those, then, were my adventures with the OHRRPGCE.

I found Castle Paradox by sort of following the crowd. Shortly after I discovered the engine, I found out about the #ohrrpgce IRC channel. After dabbling there for awhile, I grew fond of its members - particularly Harlock - and so I decided to keep tight with the community. I began writing articles for the defunct Operation: OHR, predecessor to Castle Paradox, and posting on the Zantetsuken message board which unfortunately no longer exists. In fact, my first campaign on Zantetsuken had nothing to do with the OHR, or Zack, at all but...God, I still don't know what possessed me to do that! May the Almighty Zack forgive me. Anyways, both Operation: OHR and the Zantetsuken message forums have gone the way of the dodo, and the OHR Community has moved on to a new watering hole, Castle Paradox, which exists thanks to the hard work of Chaos Nyte and his associates.



...And now, I'll leave you with what you all really wanted to see!
