Harlock told me this design is boring and unoriginal..

It's a little trendy, but not incredibly boring or unoriginal. I'd have to learn something about his personality.

It's an original design, but not in an incredibly original style. It reminds me of Tesuya Nomura and a half dozen other character designers. But don't let that discourage you. All artists start out by emulating their favorite artists. My writing started as a hybrid of Frank Miller and Mad Magazine. My art started as a hybrid of Miller, Amano, Leonardo and general anime.

Not that I'm an amazing artist, just that most artists begin by emulating their idols. This is actually pretty good, but you'll be doing much better if you keep at it for a couple years.

Work on the hands, the fingers grasping his sword appear to be the same length as those he has pointing out on his other hand. Plus they're stubby.

As far as character design goes, that could use a little work. If you took away everything (no not the clothing, you hetai pervert); the colors, the little details, etc.; and make it just the silohuet, then you better be able to recognize this character among others of similar build. The sword is a good start. MABY making his equipment visibly unique will make it a better character design.

What?! Why am I saying maybe!? IT WILL MAKE IT BETTER! Razz

If someone else can look at just the silohuet of your character, and say, "hey, That's ___!" then you have a good character design...

Have fun. (peace out)[/b]

I'm guessing you are going for the whole "dark knight" thing, which works (nice drawing for mspaint, by the way Raspberry!). I don't think he's boring at all, in fact he looks pretty cool. I like the similarity between his red-tipped hair and his coat trimming/gloves/sword hilt. However, his armored legs and the gray coat are a bit...boring in terms of color. But it still looks really neat (lets see a sprite now What?!?!)

looks good, but i think the entire body is very rigid and square.
i can understand if it was meant to be square, but i don't like rigid body drawings.

the colours aren't too shady, but it seems like his clothes are blending into his hair. perhaps a different tone of gray would be a better idea.

I actually think this looks very good. Was it an Oeikaki or just CG?

Heh, i'm more asking about the design here, not the drawing.. I'm aware the drawing isn't too great (I fugged a bunch of things), it's just something done quick with a mouse.

I know about silohuets... And the reason the body looks rigid is because
the sword is in the way. Not to be too defensive though; I've took to heart that maybe something should be done about the costume design to spiff it up a bit.. I'm considering more armored parts and a slightly different colourization.

Anyway, when I'm done it (if i bother) I'll post a updated picture.

Edit: rolling stone, do you mean style as in design style or as in drawing style? I've never been told my drawing style is unoriginal.. so clarify a bit?

I mean in design. It's not as uninventive as Tetsuya Nomura tends to be from game to game (really, every cast of characters he's ever drawn looks a lot like the last one) but it still bears the definitive mark of other designers. A shortcut to more unique characters is probably just to expand your list of favorite artists. When you have a million influences combined into one style, it gets harder to identify specific influences.
