Because a game should focus on gameplay, not story. The story should supplement the gameplay, even in an RPG.

When I said the battles should be improved I meant: You should start with higher stats or the enemies should start with lower stats.

Not that it matters cause I'm the only one who voted for that. I guess the core gameplay is more important to me than "gimmicks."

YES. Too many people forget that an RPG is a game and not a book. I used to be one of them. Oookay...

I think the idea is that the gimmick becomes a part of core gameplay by being added early. Battles will need a vote sometime in the future though, just as graphics will.

Iblis, you stole exactly what I was going to say regarding story. I hate you.

Besides, story is supossed to be designed before you start work, but that is beside the point.

The real choice for me was between Battle (ie Gameplay) and Length. The battles are, to say the least, tedious as everything, and I hated playing it. The only thing that made me happy about it was that it was short. Plus, games don't HAVE to have a good story/graphics/length to be funny. Take IMD:Anthology. All those games are short, easy (which is good gameplay in this case), had generally no story (save SIGMAR), and were short. There wasn't any gimmeks either, but I still love those games.

So, yeah, battles gets my votes. Why people voted for Graphics is beyond me...though they were ugly they weren't Magnus awful (well, the tilemaps were, the rest of it wasn't).

And I don't think we need gimmeks this early on. If I were choosing, I'd say battle this time and length next, then probably story and graphics (depending on hwo much of an improvement in each area we get)

I'll be closing the polls sometime tomorrow, so I suggest anyone who hasn't voted get their votes in, otherwise it looks like the next update to Generic RPG is going to be a gimmick. Thanks for all the votes and support so far, this has been very enlightening!

Gimmicks should catch the audiences' interest pretty early in the game and keep them wondering. Translation: Gimmicks are good.

Is map design important? Puzzels can be incorporated into a map and make even travel through your world entertaining. Would Map design be it's own catagory? Or would it be part of some other catagory?

Well, other than that I would have to say that grafics are fine, and length is good for demo size. For this to become a full size game would require MUCH more length, but beef up what you have now. After that add length. That is all I have to suggest for the time. Happy

I disagree with the apparent choice to have a gimmick. At this stage in the game's development, there is nothing to be done with a gimmick. Plot, graphics, and length should be extended, before we get a hook to keep people in. However, length and etc. may be added update. I can only hope we don't vote Gimmick again.

Edit: My 100th post. Somehow I thought it would feel more special.

Alright, the polls closed. Thanks for your imput everyone, I should have the next update ready relatively soon based on the winning choice of Gimmick. Oh, and Giz, and everyone else who was unhappy with this week's winner, I suggest that if you have a strong opinion on where Generic RPG should go next, why not attempt to convince other voters of it via AIM and MIRC? It'd certainly be interesting.

If any of you have a gimmick you would LOVE to see in GRPG, now is the time to suggest it! I can't wait to hear your ideas!

Parodying the entire OHRRPGCE Universe/Community could theoretically be considered a gimmick. Someone should at least vote for graphics at least once or twice to boot.

No. The graphics are fine. They don't even need improvement. Stop worrying about the graphics, christ.

MCW, stop picking on Christ.

I say, either flawless sidescrolling OR simulating the entire OHR universe for the gimmick update. Or I will lead a bloody revolution and make my own game.

I had an idea for the (evil) gimmick last night. Why not let the player choose between 2 characters? At this phase, that would be fairly easy to do, and any length updates/story updates could factor in and link the two characters. Perhaps as an incentive to update graphics, he could just be a palette change of t he first hero.
