that's pretty good.

i like the fairy, well coloured and great form, though it's posture is a bit wierd. (looks like it's gonna do a fire ball)

i'm not into sculptures of naked women, so i haven't got much to say.
the dryad looks pretty interesting.

Hmmm... I better comment piece by piece.

Fairy Drawing: The cartoon appearance works very well, although I'm not overly fond of extremely skinny figures (anorexic?). The secondary visual elements enhance the picture well, particularly the flower stem wrapping around the fairy's left leg. On the whole, it's well drawn: the proportions, although exaggerated, are believable. As well, the overlaps and pose keep the picture interesting.

I have two gripes, though:

1. The tones, highlights and shadows are too subtle. This is particularly evident in the fairy's leaf gown, as the green and dark outlines clash severely. A few darker shadows and brighter highlights should help the figure pop off of the page.

2. Dark hair against a white background is a major visual contrast, and as such, it stands out like a sore thumb. By attracting so much attention, it lessens the impact of the figure.

DRYAD: Sculpting is not a specialty of mine, so I don't have quite as much to comment on... but anyway:

The branches overlapping the front AND back of the figure is a nice touch, especially since this is a three-dimensional form. Nice sculpting on the hair and body... although it would have been nice to see a little more detail on the surrounding branches.

SWING DANCERS: Can this figure actually stand upright on its own? Heh. It does look like it took a lot of time and effort. A little hard to make out the details on the female's face, but impressive nonetheless.

Good job, James. Keep drawing and sculpting!

thanks for the feedback.

Yes, I am not happy with the way I did the leaf-dress. It looked great as unshaded black-and-white line art (which is the sort of art I have the most practice with) but when it came to shading and coloring, it just didn't quite work right.

Believe it or not, it does really stand. They balance each other. As for the faces, yes, faces is a weakness of mine. Something I have been working on. I got in the habit of leaving faces blank because I wasn't any good at them, but I'll never get any better that way, now will I?

And also I just posted:

Faceless/naked sculptures scare me. I don't like the outlining on the fairy for some reason...

How are you still posting, and why haven't you "critiquted" any of the art threads that I keep bumping in the hopes of pissing you off?

How am I still posting? Easy: I was unbanned because I didn't actually break any rules. Also, I tend to stay out of this forum. It hurts my eyes.

God damn IM must have got drunk again.
And thank you for posting something TOTALLY unhelpful, just like you normally do(I'll admit that you actually helped in teh christmas thread).

Also, that Siren thing is great, but the tail doesn't look scale-y. And the right arm looks a bit awkward to me.

My complimenting Mr. Paige on his artwork is unhelpful? I thought it was standard operating procedure on this board.

I'm working on the faceless part, but I stand by the naked-- I'm pretty sure there is a sculpture rule about that somewhere... maybe Michalangelo invented it... or something... *mumble*

My only gripe (because I'm a mythology buff) is that your Siren looks more like a mermaid. Sirens were bird-ladies. Don't get me wrong, it's still a great sculpture, but I'm just too analytical to let that pass by.

Are you sure you aren't thinking of Harpies? The only sirens I am aware of are singing man-eating mermaids (like the ones that nearly got Odysseus and his men)

They also lend their name to the order sirenia, http://www.sirenian.org/caryn.html#SIRENIA the scientific name for the family of mammals that include Manatees, Dugongs, and Sea-cows.

i thought sirens were from greek mythology or some other mythology, where they lure men of the sea with their singing, into their nest to eat... and those men were lost at sea forever...(well, that's how i remember it)

harpies were ladies with wings and flew the air currents of canyons.

heheh, i do remember this, in FF8 "siren" (the summon) was a lady with wings as her ears, which is probably where the confusion first arrived.
