because the topic didn't really seem to fit elsewhere.

as a side note... you wanna know (in my opinion) which language spawns the worst translations? thai. my mother's native tongue... and mine too but i switched to english early. the problem is... is that the sounds when translated are no longer phonetic. if you're writing a word starting with a 'g' sound... you write 'k'.

the proof: not only will many thai 101 books tell you this... but i've got an example. kanchanaburi. it's a place in thailand famous for rubies, and if you ever pass by qvc or the home shopping network when they're selling rubies... you're going to hear them say ka-channa-burry... AND if you for some oddball reason loose your mind and decide to continue watching, every once in a while you'll hear some random thai person (always a different one each time) call in and tell them it's gan-chan-a-boo-ree. ... ... and once the caller was my mother, that's how i know.

speaking of mum. her name is spelled boonlert (anyone who's played rrrrpg should recognize this), and her sister's name is spelled prasert. for the record, they're both male names, but anyway... my mother's name is pronounced boon-lud, and my aunt is pra-sud.

no where in my english books say that e-r-t are ever pronounced as u-d... but still that's the way it works. this is even worse than french! french just has letters that aren't pronounced. thai has letters that are pronounced wrong.

Komera, Komera, Komera . . .
You obviously have never attempted to learn the language that is Scots Gaelic. A more twisted sense of the pronounciation of word I have never seen. Examples:
(in the following, CH is a heavily aspirated noise, like the ch in loch or Bach or Nacht, and all r's are rolled)

Tha mi gle mahth - I am quite well (I;m feelin' really good)
Pronounced:
Ha mi gley va.

Oidhche mahth - Good night
Pronounced:
OyCHuh va.

And the rather long clincher:
Chatoir dia air falbh bho thide air am talamh na h-uairaichean air an cuir seachad ag ionnachadh Gaidhlig.
"The Lord does not subtract from one's time on Earth those hours spent learning Gaelic."
Pronounced:
CHatoir dia air faluv vo do hichuh air an taluv na h'ooriCHan air an huir seCHat akyoonsaCHud Gallic.

Talk about weird pronounciations. Mh and bh are both pronounced "v", "d" is "t", "t" is sometimes "ch", "th" is just "h" or is silent, and "dh" is whatever it wants to be, usually a really weird guttural sound that I can't type. Add to that the different conjugations of nouns depending on the syntax ("Good" is "math," but every time here it was "mhath") and the COMPLETELY RANDOM non-rules, and you have a VERY hard language to translate.
Of course, it is Indoeuropean, whereas Thai isn't, so it's got an advantage there, but still . . .

To continue the off-topicness (against my better judgement), I stand by my theory that SO2's translation is 75% exactly what the Japanese text says without any regard for English grammar and orientation. It's still an above-average game, it just needs a serious retranslation (DeJap?).

I speak Gaelic irish and I have to say I could make out most of the words,
even though the two languages have been isolated for hundreds of years,
I still got the broad meaning of it. I think to critcise a series of lanuages that are thousands of years old is a bit silly, sure the phonics sound a bit rough but the kind of people who spawned this language were of the farmer type... so I needn't explain too much.

Actually, I had no intention of dissing the Gaelic language. I think it's one of the most beautiful and outright cool languages there is. I just wanted to point out that, if we were on the subject of pronounciation, Gaelic takes the cake (and eats it, too).

ok, I just want to point out that all of the rules are not as random as they seem, it's rather that the individuals who used the language in it's early stages found it difficult to pronounce certain vowel-constant combinations... albeit the 'random' aspect of them, when certain constants are added or removed to ease this.

nintendo does censor games,

example: Yugioh, arlonwey(not sure about spelling) is completely nude in japanese version of the game, while in english version she has a red dress.
so some of the games do get censored.
