I know I know, I suck at music composition, but still, tell me what you think of this forest song I composed:

For those of you who have played Partisan Legacy I up to Proaza Forest, that's where it's going. Heh. Let me know what you think, what needs to be changed, etc. Thanks in advance _________________ * SDHawk has joined #Minnek

It's certainly better than what I usually come up with, heh. I'm not exactly the best person to ask when it comes to music, but I'll say my thoughts anyways...
I like the overall tune, but those horns/violins (whichever they were, I'm bad at distinguishing instruments) got on my nerves. You should replace them with different instruments. Also I really liked the "voice" instrument, so I'd like to hear a little more of that in your song. Lastly, you should work at having a little "jingle" (for lack of a better word) that recurrs in your song, the three little notes that you play every now and then don't seem to be enough. There's my two cents ('cuz I felt like stealing that phrase from you cuz I can't think of my own other than 'tis and heh, heh).

Different instruments... interesting. The BAM version is a lot less obtrusive, but as for the midi I'm probably going to change it. I'm playing it on repeat and I'm quickly getting the urge to rip my speakers off of the computer and throw them across the room. Perhaps just reducing how loud the instruments are... Oh well, must experiment. As for the extra melody bit type thing, or "jingle", I kinda think this fits the forest without the extra part, but I'm going to try it anyways, just to make sure. Can't dislike something without trying it first. Right-o, well, thanks for the comments, Madhatter, but I must be getting back to the music. ...where have I heard that before... _________________ * SDHawk has joined #Minnek

It's not the best thing I've heard, but far from the worst too. Infinitely better than anything I can do. It gets a little repetetive but for the most part it's fine. _________________ Locked

For some nice instrument combinations, just listen to some well-done songs and "steal" their combination of instruments. By the way, I don't suppose you have Cakewalk? I donno what Cakewalk sounds like in BAM form, but nonetheless they have really interesting "instruments" (the crystal, the gremlin, the "bright light" noise)...? Waitaminute, does BAM limit you to certain types of instruments? Man, I feel like such an idiot at times.

I think BAM technically has all the same instruments as MIDI. However some (many) sound like crap, or like another instrument, in BAM. _________________ Locked

It does fit the forest genre. Forest songs sound quiet, usually, and could have complete silence all together, but I like music when I play my games, and this is definitely a song I wouldnt mind slashing monsters to. (I think this defines my stile of fighting pretty good too) ... Interesting thoughts, I've archived them in my mind for later reference. I'm weird that way Anyways, thanks for the help, I've managed to improve the song quite a bit, and as soon as I get the song finished up, I'll upload it for you to hear. _________________ * SDHawk has joined #Minnek

It needs more instruments regardless. Strings and horns make good background themes (as this sounds like; good start). Now add a harp playing a simple melody and it'll be perfect. _________________ But enough talk, have at you! |

I don't like the instrumentation of the midi... The idea is nice, but could've been done a little less repetitively (Is that a word? ). One thing I'd recommend...
In the main 8th note pattern where you have the root of the chord playing on every beat, and the off beats, you have the 5th below it... My complaint with that line is, the beats all have 1 note, and the offbeats all have 2. This is sort of confusing to the listener, because the accent is on the offbeats, and is misleading rhythmically. I'd recommend either taking out the root on the offbeats, or perhaps adding the third above the root on the beats. I dunno, try it out, see what you think.
Also, maybe some sort of melody going throughout? Like, not a big fast moving melody, but maybe something somewhat legato (sic... man, I need to get back into music classes... )
Otherwise, pretty good. |
