I was cleaning house yesterday, going through boxes, generally making a mess, and I discovered something that I had never realized I even kept. The earliest known picture of Bob the Hamster!

I drew him while on break at my first part-time Job when I was in junior-high. I drew him on the back of one of the "1$ Off Golden Apple Pie" tickets which they were paying me to pass out to strangers on Main Street Julian (I suspect that the origins for my deep antipathy for all forms of advertising lie in this job)

Anyway. There he is. The first incarnation of Bob... sort-of. The truly remarkable thing about Bob the Hamster is that he has a dual origin. Near the same time I drew this (within a month), my cousin Brian *also* drew the first known picture of Bob the Hamster on the margins of a Church bulletin (along with the first known drawing of a Plip) -- Oh! What I wouldn't give to have a scan of that!

It is entirely possible and likely that one of us inspired the other somehow, but neither of us can remember how or when, so it stands that Bob has two origins.

Everything outreaches from each other. Now your asking, what does that mean? I don't know, I heard it somewhere. What can I say? It's like the seed of OHR, kind of. Maybe not OHR... but something. I'd give almost anything to find my first drawing of 'Eggie'.

That drawing reminds me a lot of Ren and Stimpy.

I'm ashamed to say this, but my characters were originally made because of Pokémon. I made a character named Josh (based off of me, of course) that had a particularly tall Alakazam named Hocuspocus and made stories about how they'd own on all these other trainers and stuff. I actually got OHR so I could make games about them.

Eventually, I dropped the Pokémon, but kept the characters Josh, Greg, and Amy. I made new stories for them (including a Final Fantasy 7-related story), which most of you would know as my newbie game ORBituaries, but dropped that project 'cos I thought it was stupid.

Now, I've renamed Josh and Amy (Caleb and Fiona; I only changed Greg's last name), made a load of new characters and completely different stories that make a lot more sense than all of the previous ones. Of course, all of them have grown older (I think Josh was originally 13, but Caleb is 17 in part 2 of Where Gods and Mortals Dance) and grown into their own characters.

Anyway, regarding pictures, I still have some old notebooks full of pictures of my Pokémon through post-ORBituaries eras (I call them my "archives"), but I haven't scanned them out of shame. I've actually thought of scanning a few to show how my art has developed.

Let's see... My first drawing for a game character was waaaay back in grade five. It was of teenager named Vivian, and the game was called Zodiac...Hardly original. I dropped the idea for it after two weeks. I still have the original sketch...somewhere... Most of my drawings are in one big teetering pile of junk ontop of my desk Ha ha ha! I haven't mentally prepared myself to look through it yet.

Uncommon, you're not the only one to use OHR because of Pokemon related stories...
my character pretty much developed the same way yours did. Instead of shifting to themes already produced (like FF7) I decided to be original and used aspects of my life to shape the character's own personality.
I created 8 characters one based on me and the other seven are based on close friends whom i've grown close to.
Two to three years has past, and I've developed every character's distinct personality (all eight).

Story-wise... what story? I'm trying to find a story that doesn't seem cliched and killed to it's days. I've only got bits and pieces of stories that would amplify my perspective of the character's personality... nothing solid.

I think I still have pictures of pokemon drawings I made (no not for the game, these were made out of self interest) I'll scan a picture of the main character when I get another usable scanner.

God, all I did was made people sad.

I have several pictures of all my other RPG characters, but what happened to Eggie? Oh, hear me, Eggie, come to me, come to me, this is Ryan. Hmmm...

Well, all of my characters were still based off of me and people I knew, there were just in a FF7-related story (it was, like, 200 years after, or something). Their personalities were really just extremes of traits that the person they were based off of had (for instance, Josh was always angry, Greg incredibly pessimistic, Ice a hyper idiot, etc.).

Yeah, but after I changed their names, I didn't regard them as the same person anymore, and they ended up developing their own personalities.

i remember my first winger picture... my mouse had died so i was stuck using mousekeys (had not yet obtained a stylus). i did the drawing in a trial version of adobe photoshop, so i couldn't even save the picture in progress, and thus had to leave the program open for three days (because using mousekeys is inhumanely slow). to save the picture, i hit printscreen, pasted to mspaint, saved it as a bmp, then used thumbsplus to convert the bmp to gif.

quick trivia: most of the enemies at the begining of w;p1 were done with mousekeys during this time... just in case anyone ever wondered why the earlier enemies weren't quite as fluid as the later enemies.

heh, damn mousekeys are so annoying.

good thing I've got a choice between a laptop "joystick" mouse or the generic mouse.
