A journal post?! Impossible!
Wow, lots of classic games here. When I was ~8 I was obsessed with Jill of the Jungle! Unfortunately I only had the shareware version, but even that took me a loooong time to beat. The demo roll for the episodes in the full version looked so awesome - giant mushrooms. Anyway, I don't think I've played it or looked at it in something like 15 years. Honestly, although it's quite different from I remember, it looks much better than I expected, both gameplay and graphics wise! Of course the audio which you replaced was pretty horrible I'm sure. So thanks for this.
Seems like your commentary is very sparse in Jill, which just isn't to my taste, as I honestly felt lonely watching it. (Plus I could hardly heard most of the commentary). Though I also had a look at a commander keen video, where the use of subtitles is completely different _________________ "It is so great it is insanely great." |

The sparse spoken commentary was one of the reasons I switched to doing subtitled commentary this year - since I can typeset the commentary afterwards at my leisure I'm less pressured to adlib something worth saying while I play (which also improves the quality of play a little since I don't need to discard good runs with bad commentary).
I may eventually redo Jill and Hocus Pocus to fit the new style since (1) I can get HD that way and (2) they're infinite lives games so the death montages will be easy to cut together. |

Hmm, OK. I seems commentary really is a lot harder than it looks, but some people make it look easy
I suppose subtitles are an improvement but not ideal either... does anyone ever record playthroughs and dub commentary over it afterwards? But it wouldn't be "in the moment".
Is there really any point recording those games in HD? At absolutely no point did I notice that it wasn't HD; I didn't see any compression artifacts. _________________ "It is so great it is insanely great." |

Some do post-commentary; it's a bit more practical for some formats (informational, co-commentary) but for the most part live commentary is considered more entertaining because of raw reactions to stuff like the Pyramid of the Forbidden.
Regarding the HD thing: What I do for the current stuff is I record at the lowest possible resolution, then I upscale it in AviSynth to at least 4x so that yuv420p/youtube doesn't introduce errors. 720p is just my standard target since that allows for 60fps. |

Youch! Nasty. I found that game very difficult; I never got far. _________________ "It is so great it is insanely great." |

The Death Montage for Commander Keen 5 is up.
Also, as a note if anyone's interested: Due to personal commitments I'm going to not be doing a regular LP for the month of June. I will however start streaming twice a week to compensate (day and time to be determined; once I pin down the when I'll announce that). |

Heh, neat. You really know this game well. But some of the commentary goes by too quickly to catch when I'm half watching the game and half reading the text.
What's dispute hell and what does it have to do with ads? Some copyright owner prevented the video from being posted? I didn't see an advertisement. _________________ "It is so great it is insanely great." |

Part 1 of Metroid II: Return of Samus is up.

The copyright holder to this piece of music that I substituted in elected to monetize the video, which introduces advertisements for those viewers who don't use adblock. The ads that got used were the pop-up-at-the-bottom kind, which puts them squarely on top of the subtitles.
When I counterclaimed public domain he (1) won the counterclaim and (2) resumed monetizing the video, so it has advertisements for viewers who don't use adblock. |

Wait, so someone claimed copyright on a piece of public domain music? Was the recording itself not public domain (which I believe is the case for modern recordings), or are they in the wrong? Besides, I thought US government works were not copyrightable. The system is definitely set up to give copyright trolls the advantage.
I watched part 1. I've been meaning to play through Metroid 1 for a long time, though Metroid 2 had a bit less appeal to me because of the platform (aside from seeing the metroid growth stages!). IIRC it's regarded as a worse game than Metroid 1?
If I'm not going to play it, I should definitely watch a playthrough of it instead. But you make it look so easy! No doubt it would take me many times as long to play. I'm actually a bit sad to see you make the alpha and gamma metroids look like such weaklings. _________________ "It is so great it is insanely great." |

As I understand it, the guy holds the copyright for that specific performance in behalf of the USAF band, such that USAF can collect royalties from it.
And yeah, Alphas and Gammas are weaklings. Just wait for the Zetas.
The last Final Fantasy 8 stream is up. I didn't win, I'll be finishing on my own time, then going back once I have a workable strategy and recording that.
So, with that said, my next block of streams will be Might and Magic 7: For Blood and Honor. I'll be streaming both endings with the same party composition, but I'm leaving the party composition up to a poll. So please vote in the poll. |
