I have two ideas in mind:

One based on a currently loose storyline involving the player as a tall, dark-haired rogue named Wedonkind who becomes the unofficial leader of a scattered resistance to totalitarian rule. Wedonkind himself is a darkly humorous man, and being a loner most of his life, has great conversations with himself.
The basis of the gameplay would be adversity and wits over brawn. (Most of the time, if you're getting into battles, you're doing something wrong). This would require some hefty plotscript know-how. *The battles would definitely not be based on random encounters. If this is even possible yet, the npcs would be equipped with "sight" by tile-based "radar" (so the player could sneak behind them undetected, but in front of them would set off a battle). *The movement would be best done pixel-by-pixel (tile movement just wouldn't be as fun with this sort of game). *There would be a few puzzles in the game, but I'm not interested in totally frying the player's brain. *Perhaps even a couple parts with choice-based dialogue requiring persuasive answers to get out of the situation. The game would take place in a semi-large castle, where the ultimate goal is to assassinate the rising emporer. This is the project I would hope to do, but a Bena can only dream. The list of features there are only ideas, I'd like to know what everyone thinks.

The other idea is a more straight-forward RPG, based on the story of Beowulf. The game's goals would be to kill three of the adversaries in the book. This is definitely the more realistic of the two, but I would definitely like to explore that first idea someday.

Rest assured, I'm not doing either idea without a capable team. It's all or nothing with me.

I've told Fen many times he owes me for my work on Vikings : p He's expressed interest in the beowulf idea before. What do you guys think?

Pfft. Of course choosing the route that requires less thinking will be easier, but the rewards for creating something of your own can be so much greater. Why not combine the two? Make the...Dark haired rogue...one of Beowulf's men and show the stories through new eyes?

...Beowulf is the viking that pummels everything with his bare hands, right?

Yep, that's Beowulf.

Wedonkind's (WEHD-uhn-KIND Raspberry!) game is a lot different from Beowulf's. In fact, it's technically opposite, since a game with Beowulf would be all about the battles. And I can't really bend either story. Wedonkind's story may be sorta loose right now, but the world and circumstances are solid, and established (a lot more complete than I implied). It sorta *has* to be one or the other. This is a good start though. More thoughts, more thoughts!

The story of Beowulf practically pioneers every oddity in RPGs by talking about how one man can take on random battles in the middle of the sea and still never run out of breath.

And being able to kill stuff with his bare hands suggests he's an FF1 Monk. FF1 Monks are insane.

Go with the story of Wedonkind.

I support the first idea better. Never been a big fan of beowulf.... the movie is ok, I haven'T bothered reading the book, its just not something I'm attracted to, and I don'T really like games that take up on movies or books... or ff fan games for that matter XD PErsonnal choice only, feel free to disagree fully Wink

Pfft, book? Beowulf's an EPIC!

Besides, the movie does it no justice. I'm guessing you saw the SciFi version? Yeah, in the book they didn't have a crossbow of total destruction. That thing pissed me off; it took the place of Beowulf's hand to hand nasty combat.

(Even though I'm meant to be working on something else,) I volunteer for any complicated scripting jobs - I've been wanting to script a pixel based movement system for a long time now, but haven't had a chance/reason.
