IIRC you basically have to use the version that comes with SOJ for it to work. (The one on Studio Eres should work?) That's what I did anyway. I haven't tried it on the newer OHR, though.

I've done that ... but the game.exe that comes with it seems to be a newer version than that which made the game.
When I run jade using the packaged game.exe, it starts printing all that backwards compatibility stuff to screen - this means the .rpg file is older than the version of game.exe, right?

Maybe if I find a game.exe from 2005 ... or whenever the SOJ was released ...

Sheesh - now I'm getting problems with Wingedmene.
I'm getting a bunch of empty text boxes.
Is this some sort of backwards-compatibility issue? I know it's an old game...

Heh - I'm trying to play all the games that I've missed in the past few years and so far 2/4 have worked :-S
Note to self - keep my games up to date with the latest build!

i know SOJ had its own version of the OHR, some edit was made that was specific for that game, separate from the official OHR versions.

i assume that whatever was done would break backwards compatibility, as otherwise it would have been made a real feature.

perhaps somehow the file on hamster wheel has the wrong version of game.exe, have you tried the rpgcreations website? (i think its hosted there?)

I'm trying rusalka right now and it hasn't crashed yet...

So the after-battle crashing could very well be a back-compat issue.

No! Not Walthros!

That's the one old game that I have played!

I wonder - if you just open and save them with the new custom if they'll work with the newest game.exe
That would be weird - you would think that custom.exe and game.exe would have the same back-compat code.

There is a version of Sword of Jade that does not work with xocolatl or nightlies (see SoJ's page on the wiki for details.)

However, the newest version of Sword of Jade, the "Community Edition" (downloadable from here) DOES work fully with the latest nightlies. You should play that version.

If you have a problem with Wingedmene or Walthros, please definitely report it here.

Any time any old game does not work with the latest nigtly wip, that is a big problem, and I want to know about it.

SoJ did not use a custom version of the OHR. It was released with Quaternion or Rusalka, can't remember. I recommend either you play the original release, which included the manual, game launcher and extras, with the game.exe distributed with it - if it shows a bunch of upgrade messages, then you downloaded the wrong version (probably rinku's horrible unofficial rerelease which you definitely should *not* play) - or get a nightly from the lat 6 months or so (NOT xocolatl or any other version) and the community edition. Also, might want to grab the original anyway, for the manual, which I don't think is included in the community edition.

They do. That won't achieve anything.

I ran into apparently a couple SoJ specific engine bugs, but I've only seen them once: '' . bug_title('721') . ''

And please, for goodness sake, report games which no longer work! At some point, I would love to sit down with a bunch of old games from 1998 and try to get them to work.

Yeah that community version works. Esselent.

When I'm done with SOJ, I'll try Wingedmene again and see if I can figure out if the text boxes are a back - compat issue.

SP is refilled after clearing any battle, but to raise Max SP you have to choose to raise it on level up.

Come to think of it, there used to be a really cool online manual for Sword of Jade that imitated the old style of video game instruction booklets, complete with little drawings and a "guide" character.

And then it got eaten by web-squatters. Did anyone make a mirror of it? I hope so.

Hey, I found that pristine blade in the first dungeon (the one with the crazy plant) - is it supposed to open the "blade lock"? Because ... it's not.

Edit: Nevermind, I found the second sword after discovering that the staircase-that-doesn't-look-like-a-staircase was actually a staircase.
