				 Posted: Tue Jul 23, 2013 5:27 am    Post subject: OHRRPGCE Top 15 - 2013 |
				     |

  |

Previous Top 30 polls can be found here and here.

We've had several Top 30 polls over the years, but I've decided to cut it down to 15 for several reasons. It appears that there tended to be a lack of contributors over the past few years and I think Top 15 may be a little more feasible for most people. Also, with fewer games being released these days I think a Top 15 is more ideal than Top 30.

Without further adieu, here is how it will work:

OHRRPGCE Top 15 - 2013

- Vote for up to 15 of your favorite OHRRPGCE RELEASES. You can vote on ANY released OHRRPGCE game, regardless of how old or new it is. Demos and completed games are fine, but we're not going to do unreleased games (anyone remember Rinku's games showing up in Top 30s without even being released?) You don't have to vote for 15 games, as one vote would be better than none at all.

- List them in order, as your top pick will receive the most points while the lowest will receive minimal points.

- You may NOT vote for your own game.

- If possible, please include a short reason that you chose each game in your list.

- You can post your votes in this thread, email me at mballsubATgmailDOTcom, or via PM.

- The deadline for voting is August 31, 2013. I will then tally the votes and posts the results on The Hamster Wheel, Slime Salad, and Castle Paradox.

If you have any questions, please feel free to ask here. But again, please do not submit your votes on this thread.

For reference, here is a list of games released in 2013. Again, you can vote on ANY released OHRRPGCE game, regardless of how old or new it is. This list just shows what has been released recently.

But this voting for a Top 15 games, not Top 15 games of the season. If you want to run a Top 15 poll I think every season is far too frequent. I would probably only add a new game to my list every half year or year.

Also, how about running Game of The Year polls? I think we missed 2012; a bit late now. I think part of the reason JSH stopped running Top 30 polls was because GotY polls were much more interesting, and despite new games not often making the Top 30 lists, those lists changed a lot from year to year, showing it was largely down to whims and who voted. But it's been years, so I'm happy to see another Top X poll.

How are you going to tally votes? People have used variations of Borda, Condorcet and Bucklin voting in the past. Personally I've found all previous systems flawed (that's a mathematical fact actually; this is a sizable topic of research). For example if you use Borda (15 points to 1st, 14 to 2nd, ... and sum points) if someone only votes for a single game then the difference between their 1st and all "did not rank"s is huge, usually isn't what they meant. _________________ "It is so great it is insanely great." |

I agree that seasonally may be too much. If that's the case it will be no problem to swap it to bi-annually or just annually. I like the idea of game of the year too, and it will be something I look at again towards the end of this year. I think there is a place for both Top X and GOTY, personally.

I'm not familiar with any of those types of voting, but I'll check them out. I was probably just going to do the same type that I used when processing the 8-bit Contest tallys. If that isn't sufficient though I'm happy to do it another way. TL:DR, The voting type is TBD at this point. _________________ MOCBJ Software - My Games

Just a reminder that votes are due by the end of this month. Remember that you can post them in this thread or via PM.

To kick things off, I'll share my votes. I feel bad because there's still many games I've yet to play, but I'll be extremely busy this month and will likely not be able to play many more before the due date. I still haven't played Motrya yet, among many others...

---------------------------

1 - Walthros

One of the best OHRRPGCE games out there. With it being a decade old now, I'd say that is quite a feat.

2 – Origin

Origin is a great example of a traditional OHRJRPG done right. It also has one of the better delivered stories I’ve seen in any OHRRPGCE game to date.

3 - Spellshard: The Black Crown of Horgoth

Hard enough at times to make you fighting mad, but a fantastic game nonetheless. It also throws you back to the 80s/90s JRPG era where most games were extremely difficult.

4 - Entrepreneur: The Beginning

I have no idea how the crap Pepsi Ranger scripted this thing, but I would love to see a complete title someday.

5 - Memoria

An older OHRRPGCE title that has actually aged well and it is unfortunate that it will likely never be finished.

6 - Monterey Penguin

One of the oldest-surviving OHRRPGCE games that manages to still shine even after all these years.

7 - Curse of Vampire

A fine example on how to make a fun and intriguing game with little to no eye candy.

8 - Vikings of Midgard

Top notch graphics and acceptable gameplay, Vikings is an OHRRPGCE classic.

9 - Bloodlust

There are only a handful of horror OHR games out there and it is a great example of how to do it right.

10 - Missing

Being a huge Déjà vu and Shadowgate fan, I absolutely loved Missing.

11 - Fantasy Under a Blue Moon X

Hard (from a grinding standpoint), annoying at times, and redundant, FUABMX requires a lot of time and patience, but is a truly rewarding game.

12 - Phantom Tactics

Because I was a Final Fantasy Tactics junkie for years and years, I loved Phantom Tactics. Yet another game I’d really like to see updated at some point.

13 - Blasphemous Saga Fantasy

Even though it is a short “tech†demo, it does almost everything right. It makes you want to see more, which is exactly what demos should do.

14 - King of Gourmet: Feast For Your Life

One of the craziest ideas I’ve ever seen in any OHRRPGCE game, but it works surprisingly well.

15 – Fat Frog RPG

I had to give mad props to the game that brought me to the OHRRPGCE in the first place. _________________ MOCBJ Software - My Games

Just a reminder that we are down to roughly two weeks until the deadline. I'd really like to see more responses if possible. So far, I've only received votes from about three people. If I don't get more, then this thing is pretty much pointless and I doubt I'll try and do it again.

Don't let something this simple die out. We've all played OHRRPGCE games, so pick your favorites and send me a list. It doesn't have to be 15 games but that would be ideal.

Thanks for the support.

By the way, I'm changing this to a yearly thing because I think that makes the most sense. Should give all of you even more reason to participate in this one, as it will be the only one this year! _________________ MOCBJ Software - My Games

Sorry for being lazy. I'll be voting.Sadly I could list 15 games which I haven't played and which are likely to deserve to appear in the top 15, and that always makes me leave these votes for the last moment on the off chance that I'll get around to trying some of those games. _________________ "It is so great it is insanely great." |

				I think I've voted Spellshard somewhere in the top five each time I've voted for the past decade. _________________ "I didn't start the flame war;

This is just trivia, but I noticed that your lists of 2012 and 2013 releases aren't complete: you're missing Blockworks (which noone should vote for) _________________ "It is so great it is insanely great." |

Listing 15 OHRRPGCE games you have liked is fairly easy, but putting them into a specific order is really hard. Do others feel like this as well?

So for the future, how about just letting players list up to 15 games in no particular order and each one counts as one point? _________________ Snippy:

Well I find some games easy to compare (typically if both games are both in the same category) but not when they're very different.

I agree that a ranking of games that anyone produces shouldn't be taken very seriously. I would probably use a system that ranks the last 5 all equal or nearly equal. _________________ "It is so great it is insanely great." |

Or just make two tiers like a 2-point tier (really super loved the game) and a 1-point tier (game was good).

For me it's really hard to really compare two games even if they are the same type, for example I wouldn't know whether I should rate EOTE2 or Wandering Hamster better. I enjoyed both, but neither where considerably more "epic" that I could rate them higher (plus the "don't vote for your own game" rule is debatable, because is it my game when I helped bugtesting it and did some balance fixes?). _________________ Snippy:
