Quote: | For example "Sand" is still a game despite it having no goal and no challenge. It has rules though (how each element interacts with all the others) and interactive (you can place any material yourself). However, if you would play with sand in real life it isn't really a game. |
Sand is in no way a game.
And by rules, I guess you mean its "physics engine"?
This is synonymous to looking at your laundry's dry cycle and deciding to change the color of the clothes inside. |

Oh, jeez. Here we go again.
JSH357 wrote: | I like Chris Crawford's definition of a game the best (It's similar to that Wikipedia one). I like to be a bit looser with definitions. |
Not sure if this is the one you're talking about:
Chris Crawford wrote: | 1. Creative expression is art if made for its own beauty, and entertainment if made for money. (This is the least rigid of his definitions. Crawford acknowledges that he often chooses a creative path over conventional business wisdom, which is why he rarely produces sequels to his games.)
2. A piece of entertainment is a plaything if it is interactive. Movies and books are cited as examples of non-interactive entertainment.
3. If no goals are associated with a plaything, it is a toy. (Crawford notes that by his definition, (a) a toy can become a game element if the player makes up rules, and (b) The Sims and SimCity are toys, not games.) If it has goals, a plaything is a challenge.
4. If a challenge has no “active agent against whom you compete,†it is a puzzle; if there is one, it is a conflict. (Crawford admits that this is a subjective test. Some games with noticeably algorithmic artificial intelligence can be played as puzzles; these include the patterns used to evade ghosts in Pac-Man.)
5. Finally, if the player can only outperform the opponent, but not attack them to interfere with their performance, the conflict is a competition. (Competitions include racing and figure skating.) However, if attacks are allowed, then the conflict qualifies as a game.

Rya.Reisender wrote: | I think it's somewhat stupid to sticky a definition like that. Only a large discussion about this topic can slightly reflect what a game really is (like the one I started on selectbutton). |
You mean it's stupid to post people that take the time to quote academic work in the subject in favor of Jim Bob ranting on a forum? _________________ Calehay |

Of course Sand is a game. >_>
It's even called "Sand Game".
Don't be so strict with definitions.
Also I never really understand what you are saying Calehay. _________________ Snippy:

Rya, Sand is a toy. End of story. For the sake of tying things together, it's called a game. People who make games don't think it's a game. _________________ "Everyone has 200,000 bad drawings in them, the sooner you get them out the better."

Oh really?! Post your source, then.
And even then, why does it matter? Whoever did was quite wrong, as nuts are legumes.

You are trolling for sure.
For example this is trolling:

If that were all I posted, perhaps you'd have grounds to say so.
I don't come here merely to make remarks about how ridiculous you sound, but I definitely will integrate it into my posts.
And why is it that you won't respond to the fact that there are misnomers in this world? Because you realized you have no backing to say so? _________________ Calehay |

I like that sand game. I have no problem with calling it a game. I have no problem with calling it a toy, or an activity. Much like I could care less whether you call Pluto a planet, a minor planet, a kupier-belt-object, or whatever. |

Thank you James. Lawdy, getting someone more neutral in her is pretty nice. _________________ "Everyone has 200,000 bad drawings in them, the sooner you get them out the better."

I have no problem calling the Falling Sand Game by that name, I just don't think it classifies as a game.
However, I am still suggesting that everyone SUAMYG. _________________ Calehay |

James is so cool.
The thread can be deleted now except for James's post. _________________ Snippy:
