On number 2, I should have added that I was referring to games such as Unreal Tournament and Quake III. Games like JK2:JO and Counter Strike do actually involve a bit of strategy. I say it's the best of both worlds.

Only thing is, that shooters with puzzles tend to have really lame puzzles.

True, so that's why, if I wanted a thinking shooter, I would have it require strategy and not puzzle solving.

The strategy-type games have already been pointed out, so I'll get into detail about "reflex-type" games. People don't just play games for strategic value, but also the "instantaneous" elements. People like the "intense" parts of games not because of masochism, but being able to predict what the enemy will do in split-seconds and reacting in the same amount of time. This is what makes the reflex-type of gameplay and what makes games that aren't entirely turn-based fun. One-on-One fighters rely on this element (the more the opponent can do and the more you can do in reaction, the better the 1vs1 fighting game is), and a good example would be Soul Caliber 2. Pretty much all first-person shooters (the topic of this here thread) rely almost entirely on reflex gameplay. Strategy gameplay is only implemented in "squad-based" games (Planetside is an awesome example), and "Skill gameplay" (which is the players physical abilities) shows up for things such as complex dodging and sniping (other aiming counts, so some FPS games use lots of skill gameplay as well).

Still confused?

I get the same feeling from any Metroid, aside from Fusion, which I couldn't stand.

WHAT?! I liked Fusion! Although it was more musical then atmospheric...

Yeah, but the funnest reflex game I've ever played was Tetris Attack (followed by DDR and Tetris). FPS's are just frustrating to me...because any clutz can get good at it, and it usually depends on who has the mini-death star gun and who has the pistol.

Eh. I dislike FPS's in all their incarnations.

Honestly, JSH, I don't at all find FPS game appealing at all. Perfect Dark was kinda fun, but that's the only one I really enjoyed for a short amount of time.

I think what he means by Fusion not feeling metroid like is because of its atmosphere in an area that tries to imitate others, which is a strange thing to try. Difference is that the atmosphere is more music and story driven than graphic and enemy driven.

This thread reminded me to play Serious Sam again. A mighty fine example of "pure" FPS. To be more specific, I've been playing the sequel, and you'd be suprised how many times this game, well, suprises you. I haven't run into many "epic battles" yet, but the first game let me fight literally hundreds of guys at once, so I'm expecting a similar challenge. Suprises and basic, stupid-fast reaction abilities make this game fun IMHO.

Ah yes. Serious Sam. I loved the first one, just because it was so non-stop. To me, I like FPSs because it keeps you on your toes and alert through the whole game, unlike RPGs, which make me bored a lot.
