Ah, I figure you wouldn't catch my sarcasm.

Actually, Bouncer would still be considered a beat-em up like Double Dragon, just with RPG elements.

I think "The Bouncer" is the closest to what Rinku described. It contains a party, cut scenes, a story, leveling up system and you only find bosses (basically).
That's actually closest to what I described. Rinku just wants a normal RPG without random battles at all, meaning you move through long trips with nothing to do. I think the Bouncer is actually a pretty good example if you replace fight levels with mini-bosses/bosses and have in-between towns to stock up on items/equipment out of a limited amount you get from said bosses (no grinding for gold on random encounters since there are none!)

But there are RPGs with fighting battle systems like Tales of... and Star Ocean series and they are still considered full RPGs!

The question is about an RPG without boss battles, and Bouncer's cutscene pacing is spot on as an example, not about Bouncer's battles.

DD isn't strictly speaking a classical RPG -- there are no towns, no dungeons except one, not much story or story focus, and it takes about half an hour to finish whereas most RPGs take dozens of hours. So what I meant was I'd like to see a longish story-focused RPG with only boss battles.

I've been playing around with something like that, actually, though I'm making it more as a way of testing ideas for Eclipse than as a game that's an end of itself.

No, that's not what I thought would be interesting. Just removing random battles from FF4 or something wouldn't be enough obviously, it'd have to be restructured in the way that SotC was restructured.

I have not played SotC, unfortunately, but I still think a more straight-on approach would work pretty well for a boss-only game.

I am so confused.

Speaking of battles that get harder as you level up made me think of the Golden Sun arena. In the arena, after a certain level the battles spike in difficulty to the point where regular enemies in the game that did like 10 or 15 damage do 200 instead. Granted it was an optional thing, but it pissed me off that you got punished for leveling up as opposed to rewarded.

The system didn't work because the enemy difficulty was not balanced at all. Like say at level 40, the enemies all had standard strength so you could get a battle win record of 50. By the time you are around level 48, the standard enemies beat your ass so bad, that you are lucky to even get a record of 36.

It felt like they were punishing me for playing the game MORE as opposed to less, defeating any chance I had of getting a really high win record and feeling pretty cool at how strong my characters have become. Instead, it felt like shit that my characters were a higher level than not. HIP HIP, HOORAY.
