LeRoy- If you are a composer, then why not shoot for the Make That Tune contest? You can win stuff!

Shadowiii- I know what you mean. MIDI2BAM likes to butcher everything I do. Personally, even though I know I'll get disagreement on it, I just shoot for whatever'll make the music sound like the best MIDI and I don't even worry what MIDI2BAM does to it. In most cases, it works out fine anyway.
Listen to the music in Purgatory, then listen to my MIDI OST. You'll hear a lot of what the conversion program messed up.

My main problem with Bam is that when notes are fast and stuck together without any rests in between (as notes usually are), bam only plays about half of them, creating an annoying sound, like a skipping CD. We hates it, yes we does.

Damn, none of the percussion works on my computer, I don't know what any of it sounds like. Quick notes sometimes come out right, it's weird. I think it depends on the instrument. If you have many of the same note in a row quickly, sometimes it sounds like the note is being held, which is annoying. The discrete timing makes things sound stiff too; I've faked triplets with 16th notes, but it sounds funny.
Nevertheless, I will go on record and say that I like Notate; it's VERY easy to use, at least compared to some other music writing programs I've seen, and it makes the structure of what's playing when very easy to see for anyone who cannot read traditional music notation. Most of my complaints have more to do with BAM than with Notate, but even there I mean, Nintendo music quality wasn't that much higher, and you all know the original Nintendo had some pretty cool music.

When I write, it usually doesn't matter... I've written two songs specifically to test out which way is better, Chord progression first, or Melody first... the problem is... those are the two best songs I've written, so for me, it doesn't really matter. Razz But every composer's different. (However, generally, I take a melody or theme and work it from there)

I'm VERY proficient with Theory, btw, and that helps a lot. I don't recommend, however, taking a theory class, unless you're VERY serious about music (I'm a Music Ed. Major), or else you'll find yourself disliking the class, methinks.

As for Bam or midi? I started out using notate (some 5 or 6 years ago) to write for games... but since I found noteworthy, I use that and then convert to bam. Just keep the midi simple, and check it often in Midi2Bam to make sure it's still sounding decent.

But then again, I don't write much VG music anymore... so now, I just stick strictly to Midi, so... yeah. (I still have 3 CDs left, if anyone wants one! 5$! Razz )

This'll stay sticky until it dies out.

Other incoming composers might be interested in sharing their perspectives.

when I write music I use Cakewalk Pro Audio. When I'm done with a particular song I try MIDI2BAM and if it sounds butchered, than I change insturments accordingly. I don't want to make ears bleed too badly.

Yeah, Zerith, that's what I usually do, as well, except that I use NoteWorthy Composer. Ah, who am I kidding, I haven't written any music since last summer (2002)! XD
