MOTHERLAND 1.5

The Pact
----------
Eons after the creation of the world, the gods agreed that they will never directly use their powers to change the nature of the world. They agreed that the world should remain an object of observation; However, they also agreed that they may indirectly use their powers to alter the world by means of influencing mankind.

Saints
-------
Offended by mankind's practice of false religions, the gods set forth on a path to enlighten them. Because of their pact not to directly use their powers upon the world, they each chose a few mortals to become their agents. Despite their unity in wishing to enlighten mankind, the gods could not agree on the method to do so. Each of them pursued their own goals and sought to create the perfect religions. Those who found themselves sharing similar ideals allied themselves
for the common cause.

The select few chosen by the gods were known as Saints. Immortality was granted to those who pledged loyalty to a deity. The gods' method of granting this immortality was not what most people expected. The Saints' mortal shells could die through natural means; their souls would carry on past the frailty of their bodies. Each time they died, they would be reincarnated within a handful of years with memories of the past intact. The cycle runs on an infinite loop even after the oath of loyalty has been broken. If such is the case, the saint will bear a birthmark in his or her future life; It is the mark of a fallen angel. And for eternity, the bearer of the mark will suffer the consequences of their disloyalty.

Birth of Exodus
-----------------
Among the men and women chosen by the gods was a man called Exodus. While most saints
were loyal to a fault, Exodus' fervor in serving his deity had began to fade. His original
reason of accepting the rank of a Saint was the murder of his family during the
age of crusades. The God Evran saw Exodus' inner rage and contempt for the false religions;
the fact that he was an extraordinarily intelligent man made him even more promising. Evran approached him and promised him the ability to change the course of the world through enlightening the rest of mankind.

Exodus leapt at the chance, believing that his tasks would be for the common good of humanity.
At first he followed his orders with a passion rivaling that of the most fanatical Saint. However... as centuries and lifetimes passed, he began to grow disillusioned by the lack of progress. Had his years of embracing his sainthood changed anything? Was what he was doing merely dividing motherland even more? The questions and self-doubt began to gnaw away at his soul...
