Recently, SDHawk and I collaborated on an entry for the Terrible Games contest, a game Too Terrible to mention here. Since he did all the art for that project, I agreed I'd do the art for his next game. Unfortunately, he's a lot more ambitious than I am.

The name of the game is Hydration 2, and he's officially announced it here. Unfortunately, it doesn't tell you much. But if you promise not to tell Hawk, I can tell you a whole lot more.

Your first question is probably "Hydration 2? Where the heck is Hydration One"? No, this isn't one of those Dogquest deals.

Hydration was Hachi-Roku (The Haha Guy)'s entry for the 2005 48 Hour contest, and until I badgered him, wasn't publicly available for download. For a four year old 48 hour game, it's really aged nicely, and I encourage you to play it, review it, rate it, make Hachi feel like a pretty ol' princess.

The second question you're probably asking, or at least the second question I asked "Why make a sequel to Hydration"? I still haven't gotten a satisfactory answer. I'll keep you posted on that.

I also can't say just when the game's going to be released, because there's still a lot of work to do. I'm working on the enemies right now, and not doing a very good job. I've learned a few things in the process, and I sort of enjoy trying to make Hawk laugh with the designs. But don't tell him that!

Slept in till 3 today, but was up till like 2 working on monster so it evens out. Hawk liked the new enemies, but realized that one our tilesets didn't work very well, and I'm working on redoing it. It is very, very hard to draw dirt, and I find myself envying artists who actually know what they're doing. Probably shoulda find a place to host images, as it'd make this whole thing more informative and interesting.

I asked Hawk again why we're making a sequel to Hydration, and he just mumbled something about fortune and glory. Strange man.

Pepsi came into IRC and asked some questions about Hydration. Great to know someone's reading, but he almost blew the whole thing by mentioning the journal. Seeing as how someone's actually looking forward to it, I've finished up my dirt tile, and it actually looks pretty spiffy (At least compared to the first attempts.) Now I'm reworking the walls, trying to get them to match up stylistically to the desert mapset.

Oh, and Hawk answered why we're making a sequel to Hydration! But it's kind of an anticlimax, and that's the sort of material that keeps people reading and wondering, so I shan't print it here. I will say that my theory of a wookiee lifedebt was horribly off-course.

I realize it must seem like I'm going pretty slow with this stuff, but I've worked up about 10 drafts between yesterday and today, and Hawk vetoed most of 'em. I'm struggling with how to make floors look like floors and walls look like walls. I know it has to do with shape and color choices, but despite looking at screenshots of Q-Bert for hours, I still can't quite figure how they do it.

Hawk doesn't like my new dirt, rockwalls, or how long it took me to make crap, so we're gonna do a palette swap/slight touch up to the original mapset. I don't know if I should be disappointed that I did so poorly, or happy that this means we get to join the prestigious fellowship of RPG makers who've done this.

I also took yesterday off, because of Final Fantasy Tactics. Don't tell Hawk!

This is excellent.

Let's all mail Obama and ask him to declare May Final Fantasy Tactics Awareness Month.

I appreciate the feedback, and the public service you tried to do. However..

I have a deadline now. I think Obama told Hawk.

EDIT: By the way, there is now officially no part of art that I like. I'm going to need to blow off some steam after this, and I fear that steam might take the form of another game about bad spanish, or a big red button.

Where's the daily update? You're not doing this documenting-your-pain-and-suffering thing properly

Giz, find some damn webhosting. I want to see the dirt tile that wowed Hawk!

I slowed the daily updates up 'cause I've been focusing on work. We've tied up the plot, agreed on level progression, and now I just have to do some touchup work on the battle graphics. A few of them got saved as jpg, but with a .png extension, so naturally the colors are all messed up, and a few of them are horrible without a good excuse. I also forgot to do two of them.

After I complete those, it's into bonus bucks time. I'll be left to my own devices to make as many random enemies as I want (Which probably won't be very many at all). Hawk convinced Sew to do some publicity type art, and we spent most of today talking about how it should work, what we should show, what of the story we needed to set up.

I actually had some webspace on CP, but I don't remember how to access it, and I don't think I ever got the FTP or anything to work.

Oh, and Sew and Hawk got on skype and Sew critiqued my work. I thought I would value a real artist's opinion, but mostly he insulted it while Hawk laughed and laughed. Sew was very complimentary of my maptiles, and of our main character's sprite but everything else was mercilessly mocked, but in a funny way at least. I wish I had been transcribing it, but some of the highlights were:

"I flip between frame 1 and frame 2 and it's like he's pulling his dick out. Erection, not erection. Erection. Not erection!"

"...what the hell is the pig for? No, nevermind, I don't even want to know."

"I like your poison attack, right up to frame 4 where it BECOMES A TRANSFORMER!"

and of course he had to comment on how phallic the worm I drew was. Try and draw a worm that doesn't like a donger! I defy you!

I feel like this was a healthy experience though. After Sew's dressing down, I can complete my sprites knowing that things CAN NOT GET WORSE. Cookies No Ingles, I can already hear you calling....

Getting a really late start today, but I regret nothing. Popped into the secret lair, and I might be doing the comic. It started in good fun a few days ago, with Sew kidding that he was going to delay the comic a week for everytime Hawk said comic. Of course, today Sew claims he hasn't even read the script, and Hawk gets mad and starts pasting COMIC a zillion times and then says I'm doing it. Fun.

BREAKING NEWS: In the resulting argument, I have been allowed into #Hachi. It is... not as great as my 4 years of searching had lead me to believe it would be.

Anyway, Hawk and Sew are still fighting, a zillion failed collaborations between them have got bad blood boiling out of every pore in their collective bodies.

Wow, as I'm typing this, it's really getting to be not funny anymore. I'm going to see if doing some art doesn't help defuse the situation. I don't think I'm going to type things out as they develop again Sad...

On a happier note, Hawk likes last night's enemy. It's not close enough to the source material to use for it's designed purpose, but we now have our first Bonus Bucks enemy.

EDIT: Discussion with Hachi proves I've been basing all my attempts on the WRONG WALKABOUT. This explains everything.

Hawk says he'll have "breaking news" from the programming front in an hour. I hope the war's over, and I can go home without having to finish. Don't tell Hawk, but I been slacking the last few days, haven't made much progress. May've finally nailed down the Birdman design (Based on the correct walkabout this time!), and now all I've got is a beetle walkabout and Julio's battle sprite, which I still hate.

EDIT: Haha! While lurking on Surlaw's Internet Walrus forum, I found a link to a thread about the Terrible Games Contest on some retarded other site. Most of the thread was laughably dumb, but something caught my eye.

Quote:
Lyx said about 2 hours later:

“Too Terrible” was amazing - two thumbs up, way up! Happy

An island of wisdom in a sea of stupidity, and hopefully an insight into the future of a brilliant partnership. You'll never see this, but thanks Hawk. Couldn't have done it without your graphics.
