I do have new screenshots.

But the catch is that I'm only showing them because I want to know if the "darkening" I am doing to buffer into the black tiles works out alright, while still looking okay for the parts you can walk on (I think I'll go ahead and remove that lonely light tile in the 3rd screenshot.)

These look pretty neat, and I was surprised to find how much custom menus, even such a simple one as this, improve the look of a game. "Party Manage" is a really awkward phrase though.

The "darkening" you speak of is pretty cool, but you need at least some dithering or something to make it look less blocky. Would also be best if there were some half-shadowed tiles so it wasn't just a bunch of squares.

This is without making half shadow tiles, because I am not sure the best approach geometrically while being efficient in tile numbers.

Hey, that looks really nice. Sure enough, people are complaining about the blocky tiles, just like they did for Winterfold, though actually I think it looks fine. But to satisfy everyone, maybe you could give the different brightness tiles round edges? I guess this is a bad idea if your tilespace is limited though, since it's even most costly than adding a lot of dithering. (And I don't think that single bright tile looks off.)

Lighting effect didn't look too bad in Winterfold, though then again I was playing in windowed mode. Winterfold shouldn't have been such a tutorial fest, though.

I am going to stick with blocky tiles. I am not sure why, but I feel satisfied with them.

:)
Actually, watch out for where you've put rounded corners on the sand and water - putting blocks near those looks unpleasant (in the last screenshot, for example).

Doesn't seem to make a difference.

You seem to have a knack of replying with appropriate picture replies. Raspberry!

In all seriousness though, I like your screenshots. I don't know if you're going to employ palette changes when stepping on the darker shaded areas, but I think that would look pretty cool to do.

Came from hanging around NeoGAF too much.

I'm not sure what you mean, but I assume it has to do with Ren's walkabout palette and not the whole area itself. I don't feel ready to mess with palette changes just yet.

For each of these screenshots, I have shed a tear. These are possibly the most impressive screens I've seen in a while.
