He outclasses the Black Mage in overall usefulness, being able to use spells for clearing out dangerous random encounters, while being able to use decent weapons for bosses, or he can play healer duty (although the White Mage has a much better array of White Magic spells than Red Mage does, such as Ruse or Inv, which helps immensely in tanking.)
The Ninja is arguably on par with the Red Wizard, as both get FAST and decent weapon selection, but score a point for Red Mage as the Thief sucks for half the game, until becoming a Ninja.
My rating for Red Mage:
Fighters outclass EVERYTHING/10
