I posted this screenshot on my LJ but as a part of the "actually talk about games" initiative I'll post it here too:

This is the first released screenshot of the game actually running (last one was to a large extent put together in paint, just an idea of what it would look like). Progress is fairly quick now, as I've been spending time working on it every day.

The gameplay is essentially still an RPG-style battle, but there are a lot of little differences. For example, when you attack someone they always counterattack (excepting certain attacks which stop the counterattack or daze your enemy). And being in the front or back row affects much more than just your stats. It's largely what determines a character's role in battle. There are also other differences that I'll keep to myself for now. It should be pretty different from anything you've played before.

You pick your party in the beginning. There are 10 characters total. Some of them not pictured here include a ninja and an astronaut. As you can see, there can be duplicates in the enemy party. But you can't have two of one character in the same party, and their party leader will never match yours.

Battle system aside, the game is not an RPG at all. I'm not sure exactly what I would call it though.

Looks cool.

A ninja and an astronaut? And is that a belemnite I see there? Huh?

This looks interesting.

What's the actual gameplay (outside of battle) going to be like (since it's not an RPG) if you can explain it, and what are some of the other classes?

I like the idea of including a 'distance' feature in battle. I'm going to guess this affects damage done, and recieved too, perhaps even whether or not an attack hits?

Also, you do an excellent job at imitating NES style colors.

What is a belemnite?

There's no gameplay out of battle.

They aren't "classes," really, they're characters. Since there's only minimal story all this really means is that they're named. Here is the list of all the characters:

ASTRON, the astronaut
ZORLA, the witch
GLORBEK, the blob
SHOOTER, the cowboy
IKARA, the ninja
CYBER, the robot
BILLY, the kid
BEASTRA, the sasquatch
KARKAX, the squid
AKHENAT, the mummy

You may notice that the names are somewhat exaggerated and ridiculous, that is intentional.

Yes. In every FF that has two rows in battle, the back row is completely unnecessary and I never used it. In this game it will have a huge effect on what the character can do, and I intend to make the back row just as useful as the front.

Thanks, it's a style I really enjoy using.

You draw very pleasant squids. Looking forward to this.

Thanks. The squid was my favorite sprite to draw. Well, that and the robot. And the sasquatch.

How about multi-character Mortal Combat?

A belemnite is a prehistoric relative of the squid. Raspberry!

Not entirely true -- FF4 mandates back row use, FF2 puts you outside of melee range entirely, and in FF6, it's the front row that's completely useless, since Fight is almost never your best option.

But your point still stands.
