Has anybody played both versions and been able to tell a difference besides playtesters? I know the second version hasn't got many hits, maybe two or three. Just wondering how others feel about the changes I made to the game.

I have been pushing past Mage Tower a little bit each day. I just finished up a scene in the castle next to MT that will clear up a few things, as well as a scene with Harvey at the top of Mage Tower.

Here are some hero sprites i'm currently working with:

#1: New hero? Who could it be?

#2: Is this our gel obsessed protagonist, or another person?

#3: Could this be the makings of....an Attack Fish?

Stay tuned for more info Razz
I haven't downloaded the new version (waiting for the parts of the game past Mage Tower. Until then, it's Walthros and Banana Nabana I'm playing, heh).

Sounds like those heroes you're making are for a flashback portion of the game.

Well, being a tester you have pretty much played the second version. You might have just not seen all of the changes made at the very end.

After a few days away from anything to do with my game, I decided to start back. I've been working on a few more revisions instead of adding new content, but I think the changes that were made are for the better.

Definitely an improvement, though you might want to ditch the gradient pillow shading altogether at this point. I can't claim to be a true expert (the guys at can claim to be experts if you wish to have more professional (and heart breaking) criticism (well, you're better off than Bloodbade is, actually, because I made him post a thread there, heh.))

Anyway... Here's a simple edit I made to make it look a bit better, and I do mean simple.

All I did was replace some of the brightest colors in your tiles with the next darker shade, so they won't look nearly as shiny as you had them. Plus it helps the sprites look much better against the tiles.

Here's a more complex edit, "how do I give some of my tiles a more round shape?" All you have to do is learn how to dither, so that you can basically represent detail without actually having to use more colors, like I did here:

Ok, so maybe I did a crappy job, because your rocks are hard to shade. I'm sure you get the idea though. It also helps because dithering with random patterns can give stuff like rocks more rocky texture.

Thanks for the tip, and you are right.

How's this?

*thumbs up* Yeah. That's awesome. Trees still need work, but other than that, it's great.

I do plan on changing the trees up a bit.

I decided to take the same technique and alter my stone building in town as well.

Just add another level of brightness to your stones and bricks, so that they look a little less bland.

And stop referring people to Wayofthepixel before they're ready, Newbie!
They were able to make me cry a little on the inside (;_;)

Thanks for the tips. It seems like even when I try to do something new, I always end up pillow shading it. I guess that is because that is what I am used to doing. I will break the habit eventually.

I don't think the people of pixelation would upset me. Honestly, it takes a lot more than somebody saying my pixel art sucks to get me pissed off. You have to start from somewhere.

Haha, I love the way he is responding to the criticisms. If guys with skill like them told me to do certain things, I would just do it! Not be like "OKAY but I wanted criticismz only on the monkeys, NOT THE ENTIRE ZOO!!!1"

As for your screenies DB, they do indeed show good improvement, but I'd definitely work on the trees. Use reference material of real evergreens and try to shade it like that. This and Bloodblade's thread makes me want to go back and work on my own trees. Raspberry!

Well, after lurking their forums for a while, my advice I would definitely have to give people going there is to refrain from posting portraits of any kind. Maptiles. Yes. Sprites. Definitely. Portraits. No. You'll really cry then.

Old tree beside new tree (version 1).

It is a start, I think. Let me know what you think.

Very nice. I like that better than my trees. Still wondering about your dirt tiles though. Why is there grey in them?

In the beginning, it was supposed to be dirt with some gravel or stone. I guess it is time to update that as well.

I assume the one on the right is the new one? The style is great, but trunk is too thick.

Google "tree" and look at the image results. (Or go outside and look at some trees - gasp!)
