At least it seems that way. I've heard a few theories on the subject, what's yours?

My personal theory involves the departure of CN, among other things.

I was referring to the general lack of activity.

The whole 'bots are posting more than we are, have any theories?" question can lead either way on that one. So don't start nitpicking. Either of you.

My guess would be, one: the fuckin' drama around here; and two: people don't care to join the forums, or don't know about the forums. Hell, I started using the OHR with the 4 map restriction, and didn't know about this site until a few years later.

Could also be partly the engine. It's been stated, but there are more sophisticated (and more complete) ones out there.

Maybe the world is slowly slipping away from 2d? It's true that platforms like gameboy advance sorta brought it back, but the demographic they go for is mainly preteens.

I think people don't know about ohr in general, really. I think it got really popular, people moved to different things, and there hasn't been enough new blood to fill the gap.

Agreed, the front page can be rather crazy. And load times between pages, particularly ones with stats on them, are slow as hell.

I doubt 2D/3D is the barrier here. 3D is extremely inaccessible to amateurs. For example, how much did you know about 3D modeling when you were 13? How much do most of us know right now? Even simple models are rather time-consuming; it takes much less time to make a good set of sprites than it does to make a fully-animated 3D model.

Traditionally, the OHRRPGCE has been a graphically limited DOS-based engine. While this is decreasingly true, it may account for the limited membership historically. As the engine improves (*coughUbersetzungcough*), it should attract more users, who, as Jack mentioned, may or may not find their way to CP. I don't doubt there are a lot of eight- to fourteen-year-olds making games to impress their friends and who couldn't care less about joining the forums. Generally, though, as OHR usership rises, so should CP membership.

That's rather passive though. I think it may be helpful to actively advertise the engine and site. Even if it attracted only a few users, one cannot deny the potential power of a given person around here.

Oh, I agree, don't get me wrong. I'm just saying that advertising is easier and more effective with a more robust engine.

It also bears mentioning that the CP link has been relegated to a position that is somewhat harder to find in the new format, but that's a gripe I'd have to take up with the wiki.

As an aside, I'll soon be upgraded from register junkie to full blown Tech specialist at Office Depot. Let's just say all the floor-model computers will mysteriously have Vikings of Midgard loaded onto them at some point. If that isn't viral marketing I don't know what is.

Edit (Inferior Minion): So I finally figured out how to fix the damn quote issue in journal posts...what a headache

How the heck did the OHR attract its previous users?

I can remember clicking on a link from DosGames.com which led to my intro to the OHR.

[edit]*Checks DosGames.com* Yup. That link is still there.

Somebody needs to tell them to change that link to point to http://hamsterrepublic.com/ohrrpgce/index.php/DOS.html

Why not have a link to the forums included with the OHR package?

CP is not the "official" community website. There has never been a community site officially endorsed by the Hamster Republic. The closest it's come is probably the HelpMe boards, which weren't the most popular by a long stretch.
