"The first video game was made in 1962 mostly as an MIT research..." Here goes spacewar...
The second was Archon...
And the first game with cutscenes? Karateka.
(All of which were, do I need to point it out, CGA graphics)
Now, anyone who remembers playing any of these games in a distant past, raise a hand?
*raises hand* |

In a certain past life, I played Karateka when I was 7 years old, but died immediately after three minutes of fondling the keyboard, as some idiot assaulted me, from behind, with a broken cola container.
I never even got a chance to see Akuma...
I mean, "can't recall any of 'em". |

um, I don't remember anyone having a name
But the funny thing about karateka is, assuming it was the first game of that genre (sidescroller fighting game) ost people would expect the player to have 1 or 2 battle commands... while it truly had 6!
Q,a,z,w,s,x were the battle attacks (lowkick, midkick, highkick, and the same with punches) and though the game was highly repetitive (aside from a few surprises) it was awesome to a certain degree (especially for the time).
Needless to say that spacewar was an awesome head-to-head game being the first... It was unequaled for a while too in terms of gameplay. Same applies to Archon too which was more or less a chess game but where every chess attack ended up in a REAL-TIME battle between the two... I find it somewhat funny that real-time was born before turn-based... Odd odd... or even before text-based games
I've read on some sites stuff like "it was awesome when that game came in as it associated computer graphics with gameplay" or "it associated movies with gameplay", well let it be heard that the guy who made Karateka and the early prince of persia (1 and 2 back then, which are not to be mistaken with the latter series taken by ubisoft) were from a movie director and that it embodied more cutscenes than a fair amount of games provided for quite a while. So as far as integrating graphics or movies in game is concerned, that was a fair while ago. I don't think people can truly say there is much innovation in bringing forth the video aspect into games, although I agree that 3d was quite a new step (one that I'm not personaly fond of but that truly changed the way games evolved). But once again, the first early sketches of "fake 3d" quite renown through Wolfenstein 3d through Doom (although not limited to these games) are also dating in video game's history.
Which has me suggest to sorta alter this thread's purpose if anyone is willing to answer that. What, in your opinion, are the revolutions in video games? My personal list goes as follows:
- Early integration of untextured graphics
- CGA graphical input
- Midi music
- True 3d
- MOD music
- MP3/OGG music
very lacunary... |
