I just uploaded the new version of 'The Local Gods'. I fixed the beginning intro (well, better than it was, anyway...) added walls under the trees so that you don't go up through them (which looked unnerving, at best), and changed a few more minor things. I also took out the password for editing the game, to make it easier for anyone who might offer help to make the game better. Sigh...and just now I noticed something else while play testing...I have 3 levels of healing items (HP and MP), which are SUPPOSED to give the user 33%, 66%, or 100% of their max HP/MP back.
What ACTUALLY happens, though, is that the item adds or subtracts from the stat in question to MAKE SURE that the stat ='s 33%, 66%, or 100% of the total max for the stat. Yeesh...I know this is supposed to be simple, but I'm having trouble. Sorry for the new update, but it looks like there will have to be YET ANOTHER one when I figure out how to make those items work correctly.

If this is done with an attack from the OHR instead of plotscripting, you should find the appropriate attack (for example, the one linked to "33% HP Returned") and look under the bitsets. There is one called "Cure Instead Of Harm". Activate this bitset. Then find the attacks for the other items which cure HP/MP and also set it to "Cure Instead Of Harm".
Hope this helps. Happy

No, it doesn't quite work that way. There's no way right now to make an attack that does what you want.

Thanks! I already have them set that way, however. But thanks all the same! It's actually kind of comforting to know that I can't do exactly what I want at this point...because I'm a freaking perfectionist, and it makes it a little easier for me to just 'let go'...you know? (^ ; ^)

I've dreamed of making my own RPG for many, many years...ever since I
bought a SEGA Genesis, and played games like Shining Force 1 & 2, and Phantasy Star 2,3,& 4...games which I STILL adore to this day. Then, in about 1996-1997, a good friend of mine told me about the OHRRPGCE...
and I absolutely FREAKED OUT and immediately began making my own game. I had been obsessed with all things ancient Greek since I could remember, so naturally I decided to set my game in that place and time. I was working a lot AND going to college, so I didn't have a whole lot of time to work on it...but a LOT of my free time was spent making
'The Local Gods'. After a while, I began to be very proud of my work on the game, I liked my graphics a lot! Then I started working on the story and character-building. And FINALLY, I felt like I had a game that was worthy of putting online! A complete, playable demo!...But lately, I've been playing quite a few OTHER OHR games, and even the ones that got F-MINUSES had better plotscripting than my game. It seems that that's where it's at when it comes to making an awesome game...and I just don't have what it takes to keep up. I know I'm probably just feeling sorry for myself...I mean after all, those games that I love had a whole TEAM working on them...a different person for each aspect of the game, and all I have is myself (and some good friends that are proficient at PS'ing). But these friends got a little annoyed at me when they had to explain something for the 10-millionth time to me...and I don't want that to happen here in the OHR community...I'm too glad to find that there IS one!
James Paige won't even write me back anymore, and I've stopped asking Brian & Parker for PS help. It seems that people who are good at PS'ing can't even FATHOM how someone could not understand what they're talking about...they kept saying things like 'DUDE, this is SO simple!' Which just made me feel more stoopid. Anyway, I have BIG plans for the next parts of my game, and I WILL NOT REST until I've found a way to make plotscripting understandable to me...and maybe when I do, then all of those OTHER totally self-perpetuating systems of counter-intuitive logic will ALSO come within my grasp...like calculus!...or maybe not...

PS-I've been playing 'Hikari No Senshi', and it's awesome! I tried to post on your game journal, silent angel, but either I didn't do it correctly, or was erroneous in posting my comments on your journal, so you deleted it.
Either way, sorry. You could seriously teach me some things about plotcsripting! I hope I didn't come off as condescending before, I didn't mean it that way.

Pretty sure James is swamped with work lately, so I wouldn't be surprised if he hasn't responded to your e-mails. Also, if it makes you feel better, I'm pretty bad with plotscripting too. I mostly use it for events/cutscenes and to code simple puzzles; that's it.

Thanks, 'FRIEND'! I DO feel better. So do you have a game I can play? Is there any way to search games by 'author'? If not, that would be a cool addition. Finding this motherload of OHR games is yet another cool facet of this website...it's totally awesome to be able to play other people's games! Razz Plus, it distracts me from all the problems I'm having with my own game...like I just realised that the hero variables I've been putting into my game DO NOT transfer to item description boxes, whether in shops or in your item inventory. Ever heard the saying 'Think Global, Act Local'? Well, I was thinking global, but the hero variables were acting local.
Sigh...I guess I could just say 'equip on MAGE' instead of trying to input the hero variables in the item 'about line', but being able to have the variables would be really nifty.

I'm glad you liked Hikari no Senshi, despite the fact that it's been almost 18 months since I last worked on it. Dunno what's going on with the journal, because I didn't delete anything, probably the fact that there's no posts in that journal yet.
If you have any questions about the plotscripting in it, feel free to ask and I'll try to help.
Good luck with your game design Happy.

PS: You didn't come off as condescending to me, so no worries Wink.

Thanks, everybody! I just recently re-discovered this community...being offline for a long time for lots of reasons...so I'm just now getting back into the swing of things, like downloading and playing other people's games. (like 'silentangel's') But OMG!!! 'Friend', YOU made 'City of Dreams'?! That is one of the few that I d-loaded way back when! It's amazing! You rock. I'm downloading it again, in case there's a new version, and the other game, as well. I'll keep you posted!

It's simple once you get used to programming. Until that happens, though, it's a bit daunting. In my opinion, the best way to approach plotscripting is to start with a flow chart of the command you want to write. Something like this:

Code:

move NPC right -> is the NPC on tile 4? -Yes-> end script
^                         |
|                        No
+-------------------------+

Once you have the basic framework for what you want the script to do, you look through the plotscript dictionary and try to find the commands to get those parts of your flow chart working.

I really need to take the time to fix up the gamelist pages and game journals so they interact with eachother a bit. Adding a post to a game journal requires finding the game in the gamelist, clicking the game journal link, then clicking on "New Topic". I don't think SA deleted your thread, and it didn't show up in your journals, so I'm not sure what happened to it. I could have sworn posting in other people's game journals worked, but I'd need someone else to try it and tell me, since my username bypasses most of the moderation checks. Sorry about losing your post Raspberry!

There's a link to this from the forum, but I really really need to add links from the main page. http://castleparadox.com/gamelist.php?search=1

Now that school is officially out for the summer, I'll be spending more time updating. I'll probably throw Games, Songs, and Reviews icons below each post next to the Profile, PM, E-Mail, etc.. icons. For now, that gamelist search works well enough.

Finished another update, mostly fixed some shop values, and fixed that stupid missing maptile on the corner of the world map...right next to where you first see the world map in the game. HEY, welcome to the world map, where great holes may swallow you up if you ever get a ship already. OK...I wasn't kidding when I said I wouldn't rest until I had some kinda breakthrough...and now I'm kinda loopy from lack of sleep.

First off, let me thank you, inferior minion! You helped me toward a breakthrough (and I'm not kidding). The problem was that I assumed that I needed to know exactly what all of the plotscripting commands were before I started trying to make a 'skeleton' to put them on, but when I looked them all up, I had nothing to put them on afterwards. I know that probably sounds wack, but making the skeleton beforehand has really helped. I'm still working on a few scripts, so we'll see what happens. The main one I think works, but I need to play-test it some more.

I guess I'm not so embarrassed by my 'rigged' plotscripts (IE 'framecapping' events in text backgrounds, etc.) any more...I've always said that 'it's not what you have, it's what you do with it'...so maybe I was able to overcome my left brain deficiency in some way,
and I guess there's at least something to be said for that. Blabla...I need to get my ass to sleep.

Well...now that I've shown the entire OHR universe how neurotically over-sensitive I am, I've decided to settle in and finish working on The Local Gods for tonight. (A full day!) My walkthrough is lacking maybe 2-3 paragraphs, and I'm probably going to offer a new release soon. I'm really going to try to limit doing that dramatically, as it's pretty annoying for everyone involved. I know I'll wait until at least the walkthru's done, but I've also got to fix a few more things. Aparently, one of my heros is locked at the start when he shouldn't be, it's because of the new game intro...should be pretty easy to fix, though. I'll try to make the next posted version of TLG count.

....and just a note to myself, 'if you're going to stay awake for 48 straight hours working on your OHR game, FOR GOD'S SAKE stay out of the forums while you're doing it'...
