It's usually best to use your own judgement when trying to figure out the degree of asymmetry in an art piece. Usually, symmetry only works in drawings which have geometric shapes (particularly sci-fi drawings) over organic ones. Sometimes, a lot of asymmetry can look good, but is dependent on the overall composition you're trying to accomplish. Just keep that in mind and your drawings will look fine. For example, your sketches are quite good as-is. Not too much asymmetry to kill the mood of the pieces, but don't look forced either.

Silent made a good point about asymetry, its uses and advantages and symetry and its uses/advantages. The quote was made concerning this thread.

I don't want to bump said thread, so I'll just make a journal for those who are brave enough to look at it.

I would like to point out that The first immage in the the above thread was the Ananaki OverKill. The Ananaki (an alien race) are technologically advanced in a way that they should be able to make precise geometric and algebraic calculations, so there should be PERFECT symetry on this one. Unfortunatly, I am neither Ananaki nor a mathmatician of any sort, so the symetry and measurements are suffering badly. It's an innaccurate illustration, but it might get some proportions across.

Here is Oobakiiru, in all it's awesomeinity.

The Ananaki Overkill (Oobakiiru):
A marvel of enginuity that uses EME (electro Magnetic Energy) as both a power source and to hold its pieces together. EME is also the primary weapon of OverKill. It is roughly the size of a planet and is capable of destroying entire Planetary systems, however that would destroy it, so that is the last resort weapon. It is used as an invicible fortress for the Ananaki (lizard men) and runs on a host planet's naturally generated EME.
This machine is already 5,000 years old, but the Ananaki unveiled it recently. Most of them forgot it even existed after it bacame forbidden to use it when a Universal contract by the Ananaki embassadors was signed and it was secretly stored until the Universal Alliance fell in 1999 (Earth year).

By the way... I scanned my Japanese dictionary front to back, and I can't find Oobakiiru, so I assume it doesn't mean anything. But DAMN does it sound cool?

Leroy,

Come to think of it, this picture isn't all that asymmetrical. If you tilt the symmetry angle in this picture slightly to the right, it's almost identical on both sides. There's a couple of sizing issues with one side relative to the other, but other than that it's good for a geometric shape which you're trying to portray.

heh. I didn't notice that. Looking at the vertical line down the middle, I just now saw that myself. How could I have missed that..? O.O

I think I can explain this, though. I am one of those people who draw with their paper tilted slightly to the right. The sizing issues may have occured when I looked at it horizontally and made adjustments to the shapes and lines so they appeared more symetrical from the front. Haha! I am THAT stupid...

Thanks for noticing. It helps me understand wtf is wrong with me. ^-^

PS: If you're right-handed (which I assume you are), all drawings (and most writing) are normally tilted slightly to the right. It's kinda an unconscious thing, and is pretty much normal. Same thing happens with lefties, but theirs tilts to the left. It's also caused by the paper tilting...which is basically comfortable for the hand to write/draw properly on. Big grin

See? I told you they'd be working soon! Happy

PS: When I'm trying to emulate perfect symmetry, I somewhat divide the page into two parts unconsciously, then I draw small parts on one side of the imaginary "line", then draw exactly the same on the other side.
However, for the most part, most things aren't facing the camera directly. This is where foreshortening and other stuff like that comes in handy.
