Them's Fightin' Words
"Shagler's Adventure"...I knew I should have been suspicious when I saw a typo on the title screen (no apstrophe), but like a good little reviewer, I pushed onward. It is not a road I would take again.

First things first, the graphics. To say the graphics of "Shagler's Adventure" are uninspired is an understatement. Blocky, undetailed maptiles make up the world that the undetailed little Shagler explores. Some tiles are made up of only one or two colors; the only battle background is the sandsea bitmap that comes with the editor. This is not acceptable.

Secondly, the music. All of it (three songs) is taken from the editor. It fits though, and it stands as the best part of the game.

Which brings me to storyline...."Shagler's Adventure" has no storyline. It is a non-linear game where you wander the three towns of the world and help people. One guy asks you to buy him an ale, so you buy him an ale. He gives you a key you can use on a chest in another town. Find a woman's son, she gives you a key a guy in the first town lost. No ancient evil to stop, no crystals to protect, just a Good Samaritan wandering the countryside. This might have made for an interesting game, but "Shagler's Adventure" is hardly a worthy vessel to explore such a dramatic undertaking.

Finally, gameplay. "Shagler's Adventure" consists of perhaps two or three battles, all against wolves, and all with the aforementioned sandsea as the background. This game has its share of typos and grammatical errors, but is also host to some more glaring faults. Problems with the wallmapping (you can walk across the ocean), doors that don't work, doors that warp you to other towns for no apparent reason, and no definate ending. The only point of gameplay I liked was the addition of a horse as a vehicle. I guess with everything negative I've found in this game, I'm required to like at least something about it.

In conclusion, you could say that "Shagler's Adventure" suffers from a plethora of shortcomings that hinder it from resembling anything like an ejoyable game. At twenty minutes long, it stands as a short lesson of what not to do with the OHRRPGCE. I can't in good conscience recommend you play this game for any other reason than that.
Final Scores
Graphics: 2.5/10.0
Blocky, undetailed graphics. Just blah.
Storyline: 1.5/10.0
There is no plot. You just wander the world (all three towns) helping people find things.
Gameplay: 1.5/10.0
There is at most two battles. No driving story, no compelling reason to play.
Music: 4.5/10.0
Taken from the editor. At least they sound good.
Overall Grade: F
Final Thoughts
We all have that first, newbie game that we all wish we had never made. "Shagler's Adventure" is TK Software's.
