Review # 17 for JSH357
Them's Fightin' Words
Walthros. A world inhabited by strange and glorious wonders, intelligent and diverse creatures, and a legacy that darkens the fate of the planet. This is a story; an interesting and epic tale about a floating fish named Bob Surlaw. While investigating strange happenings at the Blue Shrine, a monument near his own home, Bob encounters a creature that will alter the path of his life drastically, forcing him to go on an adventure he never wanted to take part in.

I do not want to give any more away about this game. The story is very well-planned, interesting, and best of all, LONG. Everything in this game happens for a reason, and most everything is explained at some point. Every character in the game has a distinct personality, goals, and morals. In fact, the game's characters are more well-described and varied than many commercial games' storylines seem to be. Even some seemingly traitless characters turn out to be more than you had bargained. Truly, the only problem that I had with this game's storyline was that, like many completed homemade games, it ended fairly abruptly. All in all, you willl most likely enjoy this game's storyline.

Now, we move on to the less-good parts. First and foremost, this game, in my opinion, does not have very much good music. Some of the towns have fairly good music, but the battles and boss fights are BORING. I don't have very much else to say about the music, as there really was not very much of it in the game.

Now, let's look at the graphics. This game has some good graphics in it. The trees, Bob's House, many of the dungeons, and the overall variety in characters is good. However, to be perfectly honest, the sprites need work. Most of the enemy graphics are acceptable, but there are a few that don't look good at all. I like how most of the heroes have a few distinct features, but in general, the art looks fairly bad. The walkabouts, I think, are better than the hero graphics for the most part. Anyway, I'd say the graphics are about average for an OHR Game.

Finally, let's have a look at the game itself. Walthros is a standard turn-based RPG, no frills, nothing special. I had big problems with character balance in this game. There are numerous characters that I found useless, and even some that I saw as overpowered. Another problem I had was that the game was very, very easy. The only time that I died was against a secret boss, but I found the trick to beating him after a while. Speaking of tricks, one good thing about this game is the diversity in bosses. For example, one boss requires the player to defeat four parts weak to different elements before he or she can attack the main part. While not all of the bosses are too strategic, many of them are. In addition, there are numerous sidequests to complete, and even alternate endings! Each sidequest gives a fairly good reward, and also makes the final fight(s) significantly easier. Unfortunately, I doubt that I will ever play this game again. There just isn't a reason to do so, as the game is linear and there does not seem to be a way to change it very much. Still, I highly recommend playing this game.
Final Scores
Graphics: 5.5/10.0
Some of the graphics look good, some of them do not. However, this game looks quite a bit better than many OHR games that I have played.
Storyline: 9.5/10.0
I have never seen a better storyline in any homemeade game. (I don't give 10s)
Gameplay: 6.5/10.0
It could use some work, honestly. But, the game is long enough to merit playing through.
Music: 4/10.0
Dull for the most part, but at least it isn't ripped. There are a few good tunes.
Overall Grade: B
Final Thoughts
This is a very enjoyable and interesting game. I hope that Surlaw makes a sequel/hardtype. because I'd really love to play it. I highly recommend playing this game if you haven't already, and if you have not finished it, I recommend doing so.
