Review # 17 for Aethereal
Them's Fightin' Words
From one look at the title screen and the above-average graphics of this game, anyone might think, "Wow, this demo could be great". Unfortunately, it doesn't live up to its claim...

Really, it amazes me why so many people send in walkaround demos. 99.9% of walkaround demos suck, and suck bad (The Fallen Knight, anyone?). And while The Legend of the Magic Sword is probably the best of any walkaround demo on the OHRRPGCE, it shares something in common with all the other walkaround demos: Its boring!

Fortunately, the author tells you that the demo is just walkaround, unlike most others. However, it is a game demo, and it was sent in for review, and review it I shall.

The game's graphics were well above-average considering the average level of graphics in the OHRRPGCE community. Of particular notice are the battle sprites with their FF6 feel, being nearly the same size and shape of the side walkabouts. This is something I tend to prefer to giant battle sprites (of course, that is only my opinion), because large battle sprites tend to look ugly. The maptiles used for the trees are nice as well, and the author also used the "bump-into-the-enemies" style of encountering battles instead of simple random battles, meaning he had to draw enemy sprites for in-battle and out-of-battle. Both were done incredibly well. One more little tidbit...the graphics in the game seem to remind me of the Seiken Densetsu games for some reason...

Music in the game is taken from the editor, poorly placed (with the exception of the battle music). I can't say much more than that, because there are only so many ways to say it. Since I don't like one or two line paragraphs, I will go ahead and stick my review of the Storyline in here as well: There isn't one.

Considering the reviews of the Music and Storyline, you can guess what the gameplay gets. Yup, this game is quite boring, despite its nice graphics. What is the point? Let's be honest...there isn't one.

Perhaps I'm being a bit harsh, but The Legend of the Magic Sword has nothing worth your time as of now, except pretty graphics. However, once the author adds gameplay, decent music, and a storyline, a future update could be worth a look at.

And now for the scores...
Final Scores
Graphics: 7.5/10.0
I can only say it so many ways: The graphics were pretty. You have a real talent here...
Storyline: 1/10.0
Heh...at least "The Fallen Knight" had somewhat of a story beginning...this one doesn't mention anything story-worthy except something about a Legend of a Magic Sword.
Gameplay: 1/10.0
This is summed up in three words: Its non-existant.
Music: 2.5/10.0
Turning off the speakers won't change the game a bit. Music is nice, but bad music isn't.
Overall Grade: F
Final Thoughts
This game is hardly worth your time, with the exception of its graphics. It is only a walkaround demo, though, so perhaps a future demo holds more in store for us.
